Monumental event occurred 106 years ago this week

Lindsey-Wilson Training School opened its doors

One hundred and six years ago this week, on Monday, January 4, 1904, one of the most monumental events in the history of Columbia and Adair County occurred: the doors of "the Lindsey-Wilson" Training School swung open for the first time and forever changed the city and county. Only two weeks later, the January 20, 1904 News announced over two hundred students hadalready matriculated and that others were expected.

In the ensuing fivescore and six years, the school has made the most of good times and has always emerged stronger than ever from bad times - most notably, the Great Depression, a near removal to another city in the 1940s, and a near closing some decades later - and in the process, has immeasurably enriched and bettered the lives of South-central Kentuckians.

Kentucky Color: Baby White Oak Pink

The next earlier Kentucky Color: Kentucky Color: Not Forgotten January 2, 2010. Flowers in bloom in December on the grave of an ancestor inspire poetic memories

White Oak is a fall germinator as you might guess by viewing the accompanying photo taken in early January. The ground was frozen and the temperature was around 20 degrees.

The root sprout comes out first and in order to prevent freeze damage the stem shoot remains dormant till spring. I guess we will have to wait till spring to see if it survives.

Remembering Mr. Glasgow: Little kid thought he was magic

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I, too, remember Mr. Shirley Glasgow and his ever-present cigar. I would go to Southern States with my dad and spend time looking at saddles and dreaming of owning one.

There also was usually a box of baby chicks there that someone had ordered and he would lift the lid and let me look at them and then we would place the lid back on.

The chicks would start their sounds and he would tap the box and they would immediatley become quiet. I thought he was magic to be able to do that.

I won't ever forget how he made time for a little kid.s/Debbie Sinclair

Mr. Glasgow and Mr. Woody loved community, agriculture

About: Mr Woody and Mr Glasgow put the good in the Good Old Days

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

There have been many people in my life who have been a positive influence in my community and Adair County. Fifteen years ago I got the honor of getting to know two men who loved the community and loved Agriculture.

During my career Mr. Woody and Mr. Glasgow always had a little humor and always had something encouraging to say to a young man who cherished the words of wisdom that these two men offered.

Both Mr. Woody and Mr. Glasgow were good men who will be greatly missed and I will always remember. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
