Adair Justice Center move in day tentatively last of February

The members of the Adair Project Development Board for the new Adair Judicial Center were told at Tuesday night's meeting, December 15, 2009,that the move in date is tentatively set for the last week of February, 2010.

The board was also told that the tentative date for the raising of the rotunda dome is tomorrow, Tuesday, December 17, 2009. The decision to raise the dome was made after complaints that the decorative fixture could be seen clearly only from vantage points on Lindsey Hill, from High Street, up Guthrie Street, some upstairs windows, and from the little walkway between the Municipal Parking Lot and Adams Alley.

Jon Halsey: County is blessed with talent; can meet CWC crisis

Says there is no need for name calling; likes Principal Jones's positive outlook. Wants more broadly based input, from all leaders of all disciplines

By Jon Halsey

The frustration resulting from the school tax is understandable; However, I do not see how name calling does anything more than set in stone those who voted against the tax. These statements do not belong in honest discourse.

Changing the subject, Patty Jones has taken a more positive approach and listed some urgent needs that must be addressed whether a new school is built or not and I would argue that they are of such import that they must be addressed even if we build a new school. That time line is too long to allow our children to be exposed to such conditions.

Marsha Walker: A big Thank You

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I want to send out a sincere thanks to ALL voters who supported a new school for our students, with a special thanks to those in my District 2 (South Columbia/Harmony, South Columbia #2, Gradyville/Nell and Milltown/Portland). In our present economy, I feel that many pro-education voters agreed to made a personal sacrifice by voting FOR. Adair Co. has always been a generous community in many ways.

Research shows that students perform best in a clean, well-lighted building with a comfortable environment, and I feel ours deserve a more modern school. Thanks again to all FOR voters.

Christmas Reflections, Adair County News, 1909

By "Jim"

The following essay appeared in the November 10, 1909 Adair County News. It spoke with eloquence, clarity, and grace to your humble contributor, who finds himself a bit grayer of muzzle, longer of tooth, slower of gait, and shorter of memory this Christmastide.
The Road to Christmas

All year long we have been traveling toward Christmas--I and my old wife, our children and our grand children--not all by the same road, not all with the same expectations, but all looking out alike for the first glimpse of its smoke rising above the wintery landscape of the year. Now we can almost fancy that we hear the chiming of the famous bells--all Christmas towns are famous for their bells--and we know that shall soon be at our inn.

If life be a journey, and each year a stage upon the road, I do not know where else a sensible man would stop for the recruiting of his health that the fine old Christmas towns. There, if anywhere, men are found living together merrily; the inns are warm, the cheer is good, the amusements are the heartiest, and the society is the best. I have been through many a Christmas town --for I have traveled far-- and have rested thoroughly in each. I never found two of them alike.

Of late they have been much grayer and quieter than they used formerly to be; but I do not think that I have been less happy of the quiet towns at which I of late years have resided. Let me confess so much. As for those about me who declare them to be not quiet by any means, but perfectly uproarious with jollity, I do not interfere with their opinion. Children so easilydeceive themselves; it is enough for me that I am old enough to see things as they are.

Thanks to "Jim" for another delightful reminiscence. If you have stories to share for Christmas 2009, please send using any "Contact/Submit" button on the site. Comments are welcome, using the Comments button with this story. -CM

Letter: New school still needed

About: RESULTS: Adair Co Special School Tax Vote December 15 2009

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

With only 1 precinct remaining it appears the tax increase has failed.

This does not change the fact that we need a new school.

Once the dust settles and everyone has their say and the recriminations are over and done with maybe we will finally be able to come together as a community and decide how to best address this very real need.

I would think that a negative response of 60 plus percent is evidence enough that there has to be a better approach.

Letter: Expresses disgust with vote result

About: Tax fails. Vote is 1,852 Against to 1,096 For

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

This is a sad day for the children. I personally have 3 children attending CWC right now. All of them stay sick. The classrooms are either boiling hot, and freezing cold. You have to flip a coin to even know if there is going to be heat at the school. I honestly hope the fat cat land owners who voted no heat for the children sleep really well. I think the 3 ghost of Christmas should visit every single person who voted no. I am truly disgusted in the people of Adair County.

Thanks for trying: On tax rejection and a look ahead

By Billy Joe Fudge

On July 4th, 1776 fifty six men representing our 13 original colonies signed the Declaration of Independence which ended with this commitment, "And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor".

In that time of great distress and hardship these 56 men rose above personal convenience and pledged everything they were, everything they owned, and yes their very lives to lay the foundation for this the greatest nation ever to exist.

Writer: New Antioch RD/ KY 61 junction is dangerous

About: Historic moment at Wheeler Hill Pass

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

We live on Antioch Church Road and were hoping that this new entrance to 61 was only temporary because it is EXTREMELY dangerous. There is limited visibilty entering at Wheeler Hill.

We can't imagine trying to pull out with a trailer, hay wagon, or even a school bus. It will be a matter of time before a serious accident happens here.

Before, pulling out from the cemetery gave the driver adequate visibility to the north for vehicles coming south from Wheeler Hill.

This entrance is seriously flawed engineering and will need the hill and trees leveled to make it safer.
