11 of 16 precincts counted: 583 signatures validated

By Ed Waggener

The necessity of an election to keep the Nickel Tax is appearing to be more like after three precincts were tallied tonight, bringing the total number of valid signatures to 583, just 172 short of the 755 needed to certify the petition.

Five precincts still await validation, according to Deputy Adair County Clerk Melissa Fletcher.

The report of the total for the 11 precincts came at 6:47pm.

Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair assigned after hours work tonight to speed the results. "I'm hoping we'll be able to certify or not by as early as Tuesday evening," she said.

Says we need to buck up and pay for new CWC

About: Col Wm Casey School is in dire need of replacement

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Although I don't relish the idea of paying more taxes, I must admit that the Casey school is indeed in a state of serious disrepair. Mrs. Jones tries very hard to educate our children in a facility that at best can be discribed as harsh. After paying what I thought was a very high tax bill today that the lions share went to our school system. It grieves my to say that we need to buck up and pay for this, too.

Col. Wm. Casey School is in dire need of replacement

Temperatures can't be regulated. The building has leaks. Mobile Units lose power. Electrical system won't support Whiteboards. "The bigger picture is that we have a great school at Col. Wm. Casey, but we house it in an inadequate building," Patty Jones says. Funds must be provided for an adequate building to provide the education Adair County kids need to compete in the 21st Century

By Patty Jones, Principal, Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School

As principal of Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School it would only stand to reason that I am strongly in favor of the additional funds to allow construction to begin on a new elementary school. It is true that I see firsthand on a daily basis the many reasons a new school for our district is needed. Just in the past week the students and staff at Casey have had to deal with several common problems.

Recall petition certification probable, but may be squeaker

Clerk Sheila Blair expects decision can be made as early as Wednesday, and no later than Friday, November 6, 2009; election like in the December 8-23, 2009 timeframe

By Ed Waggener

The Nickel Tax Recall Petition validation is doing more poorly than had been expected.

Half the precincts have been checked in the Nickel Tax Recall petition, and, though the petitioners have only slightly over 41% of the valid signatures needed, County Clerk Sheila Blair said that the the petition's success is probable, given the high number of signatures in the remaining eight precincts.

The validation process started Thursday, October 26, 2009, the day the petition was filed. Clerk Blair said that she had hoped to have the decision on the certification by Wednesday, November 4, 2009, but said it may take until Friday of this week.
