KY has 12 traffic fatalities; 2 in KSP Post 15 area, in past week

Traffic deaths in Columbia, Campbellsville, are one-sixth of state's total

By Sherry Bray, KSP State Headquarters

(FRANKFORT, KY) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, October 26 through Sunday, November 1, 2009.

Nine of the crashes involved motor vehicles and 3 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Breckinridge, Grant, Jefferson, Jessamine, Laurel, Logan, Ohio, Shelby and Taylor counties. The crashes in Jessamine and Ohio counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.

One crash involved a motorcycle in Gallatin county and the victim was not wearing a helmet.

There were two pedestrian involved fatal crashes that occurred in Adair and Nelson counties.

Through November 1, preliminary statistics* indicate that 639 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 20 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2008. There were 515 motor vehicle fatalities and 277 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-two pedestrians and 5 bicyclists have been killed.

Seventy-two fatalities involved a motorcycle and fifteen fatalities involved an ATV. Sixty-five crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 139 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
