COF sends the science on need to fall out of bed early

Further elucidation on: Local lore: Trees which bring death to planters

By the COF
Oracle from Dun Roman

where Miz Emily swears I fall outta bed everyday

As any red-blooded American (native or imported - makes nary a difference) knows it takes a good thump on the head to knock some sense into any youngun. Of course no one would tolerate someone thumping a bairn on purpose, so one could only hope that the child's guardian angel would give a little timely nudge early on a before the little tyke got too far along. Otherwise - God bless him - he might just grow up to be a democrat!<

Local lore. Trees which bring death to planters

Everybody knows not to plant a weeping willow tree. You are tempting Fate if you plant one. "As soon as they are big enough to shade your grave, you die," local wisdom goes. Now we've learned that the list is longer. Add cedars, magnolias, and holly trees. Same thing.

Our understanding is that it is not the same for volunteer weeping willows, cedars, holly trees, and magnolias. Death just stalks the planter of the trees.

But the late Adair County author Janice Holt Giles took no chances on even these. Beautiful willows at one time could be seen all around the farm pond beside the Giles House at Spout Springs. Mrs. Giles had Henry cut them all down and salt the stumps to kill them, their association with death was so great.

Atty Gen Conway thinks amendment not needed for video lottery

"An opinion of the attorney general is advisory and is not legally binding. By statute, if the attorney general is asked by a member of the legislature to provide a legal opinion on an issue, he or she is required to do so. Kentucky currently has three legal forms of gambling - the state-run lottery, charitable gaming and pari-mutuel betting on horse racing.
From the Office of Attorney General Jack Conway

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 15, 2009) - Attorney General Jack Conway today released an advisory legal opinion regarding video lottery terminals at Kentucky racetracks. General Conway determined that it would not be necessary to further amend the Kentucky Constitution if the Kentucky General Assembly chose to enact a law allowing the Kentucky Lottery Corporation to operate the terminals at tracks.

Henry Sullivan was way ahead when it came to music

About: Carol Perkins The Gift of Music the story of her father, Uncles Lonzo and Oscar, and the very, very musical Sullivans -and Acrees - of Metcalfe Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I can vouch for Henry's ability to play music. My brother, Teddy, and I played with him for a short while in a band. We played until he figured out we were not good enough to play music with the Sullivans. He was way ahead of us in musical ability.

It was fun being around him and some of the other musicians. He always had lots of patience with us young boys who had learned to play trombones in the Greensburg High School band.

I love to read Carol's articles - she is a good writer.

Flying Flag is tribute to his father, Reece Harvey

Columbia is flying flags this week, and they are beautiful. One man flies the flag everyday in the Tabor Community. He flies it to show he is a proud American. He flies it for his father, Reece Harvey, who fought in three of the bloodilest battles of World War II and who flew his flag every day at his home on Adair Avenue in Columbia, KY.

About: Flying the Flag photo by Linda Waggener

By Tony Harvey

In regards to the state of affairs and flying flags all year, I for one wholeheartedly agree with this idea. Anyone who knows me will tell you I fly my flag everyday on Hwy 704, weather permitting.

It's brought in carefully every evening, although I have been so tired a few evenings and I've forgotten the chore.

Happy Hollow Barn was scene of many happy playtime hours

Happy Hollow Barn sign photo by Tony Harvey

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to comment on the photo of Happy Hollow Barn that was posted by Tony Harvey recently. Walter and Ruby Grant were my grandparents. I spent countless hours as a child playing in and around that barn. It was a very sad day when the tornado blew it down. Seeing the photo that Mr. Harvey posted brought back so many good memories. I would love to get in touch with Mr. Harvey and get a copy of the photo. If at all possible, please give him my phone number and email address.

Thank you so much!
