Gov. Beshear doing all state can to keep Corvette at BG

From Commonwealth News Center

FRANKFORT, KY - "We've been in communication with GM today (Monday, June 1, 2009) and anticipate GM will continue to produce the Corvette as they have for years right here in Kentucky. We will do whatever we can as a state to ensure the viability and longevity of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. GM's impact is not only felt through the assembly plant in Bowling Green, but with its supplier network throughout Kentucky. Suppliers have dealt effectively with the known shutdowns to date, minimizing the impact on its workforce. While production levels at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant aren't what they've been, suppliers are still preparing to supply GM for the new model change-over."

Veterans are still writer's heroes

About: VFW stands up against military suicides

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

If those shrinks had been issued an M16 and put up front their diagnoses would have been different, but I feel they had their orders to ignore the syndrome and were made powerless by their superior officers. I was one of the lucky ones who was sent to Turkey in 1969 and was wounded only by a rock and faced college student demonstrations against the US presence in Viet Nam. Fortunately, the Turkish military kept the demonstrations relatively calm by forceful policemanship. You guys were and are still my heroes.

VFW stands up against military suicides

Jimmie might still be not have committed suicide, if signs had been noticed back in 1971, Wayne Kirby writes

To all Friends, We as Veterans can see the signs of stress on our returning Veterans , some of us had the signs when we came home and some still do.

If I had paid attention to a friend of mine, Jimmie Green, in 1971 when he came back from second tour with the 9th Division in VietNam...Jimmie had sought help but at that time no one understood us.

In action last night, June 1, 2009 at the Columbia City Council
  • 'Back to Basic Services' solid winner at outset of Council meeting, but 'Middle of the Road' approach narrowly wins approval in weaning process, necessitated by tighter times. Movement by Councillors Parson and Taylor claims partial victory.
  • Parson wins full victory on restoration of full benefits package for city employees
  • Drive for safer streets gets one small victory: Mayor Bell is having one speed bump installed on Mitchell Street; situation will be studied, after that, he says
  • Citizen Rademacher now Commissioner Rademacher. Roy Rademacher replaces Lloyd French on Planning & Zoning Board
  • CJE Ann Melton asks city participation for parking lot at Senior Citizens Center on Carrie Bolin Drive. Move to expedite action stopped with one vote against suspension of rules, as Councillor Joe Moore holds the line
  • City stays with same auditing firm, but over objection of Councillor Taylor, who wants new firms considered which might detect problems possibly overlooked by entrenched firm

By Ed Waggener

In last night's Columbia City Council meeting, the Council moved to making basic city services a priority.

Acting on a motion by Councillor June Parson, the Council voted unanimously to authorize Mayor Pat Bell to hire a consulting firm to accelerate finding the solution to the problems Columbia's water system now faces, including bad taste and high turbidity levels.
