Happy Birthday: Hayden's fourth

2009-05-08 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Melissa Taylor.
HAYDEN BENNETT'S FOURTH BIRTHDAY WAS MAY 6, 2009: Melissa Taylor writes, "Hayden's incognito accomplices reluctantly agreed to shed their Spidey masks long enough for this photo.... They are, Back row, Ricki Anne Rogers, Kenzi Rogers, Katie Stone, Madison Grant, Ty Bennett and Wes Stone. Second from back: C.J. Bonifer, Schyler VanArsdale, Jalen Rogers, Jonathan Grant. Third from back: Brenton Billingsly, Caleb Lee, Kobe Stapp, Savon Stapp, Jonathan Grant, Quinton VanArsdale. Of course, the young lady looking at big brother Hayden with so much admiration is Miss Addie Bennett. Madison Billingsly, Parker Bonifer, Ava West, Callie Morrison, Cameron Kimbler, Andrew Zinati, and Bryant (a.k.a. Burr Ray) Rogers were all much too busy playing to be troubled with such bothersome things as photos! At right Hayden was excited and a bit surprised to blow out his candle on the first try -- but, of course he's a big boy now! "

Guided hike at Dry Fork Gorge, Metcalfe Co., Sat. May 9, 2009

Another chance to see one the wonderful Dry Fork Gorge near Edmonton, KY

Renowned biologist, Julian Campbell, will lead a free guided hike at the Dry Fork Gorge on Saturday, May 9, 2009. Rain or Shine: This will be a 2.5 mile hike with a steep uphill climb at the end. Participants will have to cross two creeks and should wear shoes that are OK to get wet.

Dry Fork Gorge is a trail system with a distance of nearly 3 miles and is now available to the general public, nature enthusiasts, and researchers. The user friendly trail is in an 80 acre nature preserve. The trails allow easy hiking access to two caves, a creek, a waterfall, and many other sites containing rare species. By having access to the gorge by a developed trail, users of the conservatory can exercise, relax and even learn while visiting this preserved area.

DIRECTIONS: Participants should meet at the Gorge parking lot at 1pm: From Edmonton, KY, take US 68/KY 80 west. Take a left onto the Old Glasgow Rd. (Route 3234) you will go up blueberry hill, through the S curve, pass Dry Fork Road on the left, go up the second hill and make a left onto Branstetter Road. Go down Branstetter Road until you can no longer go straight and you will see the gate to the Gorge entrance right in front of you, follow the rock driveway up the hill and past the barn to the parking lot.

Agrees: Greensburg, KY is absolutely beautiful

About: Thinks Greensburg KY renovation is beautiful

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I went through Greensburg last week and it is absolutely beautiful.

If you have not been that way in a while, stop and park on the square, visit the old courthouse, walk across the foot bridge and then you can eat at one of their two new restaurants.

It is worth a trip.

s/Jelaine Phillips

A CM "Amen." Greensburg is absolutely delightful. Jimmy Downey says it's better than Colonial Williamsburg and it's a lunch hour trip for most Adair Countians. Thanks for the reminder. -EW

Wants to know name of flower on Green River Dam

About: Green River Lake Just lots of water water through the dam

Hey Ed,

As most would attest, I am an avid outdoorsman. However, I am very unfamiliar with the ecosystems of west facing slopes of earth - filled dams. Because of this unfamiliarity and the obvious optical illusion causing the immature yellow flowers to appear as big as buses, I can't seem to get a handle on what kind of plant you have captured.

Maybe one of the many CM experts on herbage might give me a "hand up" and lift me out of my confused state, at least temporarily.

s/Billy Joe Fudge

Thanks. The answer is, I don't know. Maybe some knowledge wildflower expert will help us out on this one.

Heavy rains create Gradyville Flood 2009; county road problems

By Ed Waggener

Heavy overnight rains produced a few problems in Adair County. On Old Gradyville Road, Big Creek was over a bridge, Betsy Fausnaugh reported this morning, Friday, May 8, 2009. It was enough to cause some motorists to turn around and not attempt a crossing, she said.

Jobe Darnell, Superintendent of the Adair County Road Department said that his crews are looking at problems from at least five areas of the county this morning. At 8:58amCT, he had the following places to check:
  • Oak Grove Road in District 3
  • Odell Baker Road in District 5
  • Dotson Road in District 3
  • Allen Schoolhouse Road
  • Powell Creek Road in District 3
On the lighter side, Charles Sparks, meteorologist, Gradyville historian, and rememberer of everything that's happened and some, some say, that didn't, reported there had been 4" of rain last night. "Worse than that," he said, "we had 3" of lightning. It's bad if it piled up. A pile of that stuff will kill you if you get in it," Sparks said.
