Portland Field: Practice site for the Riptide softball team

2009-05-02 - Portland, KY - Photo by Arlinda Kessler.
IT STILL FACES AN UPHILL STRUGGLE, BUT PORTLAND FIELD Is not just a dream of what once was anymore. Saturday, April 26, the Riptide Softball Team used the field for practice. Its condition is a long way from sanctioned play, but there is talk of it. The field is owned by Kevin and Arlinda Kessler and Eddie Kessler. Many ballgames were played on this very spot iunder the managment of Huston Finn and Larry Rodgers. In the background is the Garnett Kessler & Son Store, Geneva Kessler ran the store as Garnett Kessler & Son, 1050 Portland Road, Columbia, KY, in the Portland Community, for 46 years, from 1963 to 2008. Garnett and Geneva Kessler own the houses behind the store, located at the intersection of Portland Road and Old Portland Road.

Portland Field comes to life again for Riptide Softball Team

The diamond had so much to do with making a tight knit community an even better place to live. Last Saturday, the Riptide Softball Team practiced on the field. It's not yet time for a Grand Re-opening Celebration, with sanctioned games here, but the little town 10.9 miles from the Adair County Courthouse in Columbia, KY, the little town in the middle of the overlapping catchment areas of two great United Methodist Churches, is thinking again of restoring some of the grandeur that was its during part the the last half of the 20th century, maybe starting with regular softball games -CM

By Arlinda Kessler

I am sure many people can remember playing ball on the softball field in Portland. This past Sunday, April 26, 2009, the 9 and 10 year old Riptide girls fastpitch softball team practiced for the first time on this field. The old field game to life again, and brought back so many memories for us.

Riptide Softball Team includes Mia Butler, Katy Roy, Shelby Franklin, Jera Kessler, Allison Burris, Madison Bell, Cara Murrell, Kaylee Warf, Ashley Owens, Kyla Kessler, McKenzie Withers, Kaitlyn Burton.

The coaches are Kevin Kessler, Donna Owens, and Pheobe Franklin.

Word war escalates: Mr. Marshburn shakespeares the OC

Response to: "On Foreigners: Old Coddger has higher AC naturalization standards"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Sir Bard, why dost thou flaut me? I do know that those taters need the eyes to see their way clear to sprout! Didn't know one could mix the onions with the taters before the frying pan stage. I would presume the placement of the onion would be most important and if one of said eyes should be offended, it should be plucked out!
