Adair Co. Californian Googles self cross-eyed over spoke factory

Frank Dickerson is hunting for more information on the Damron's Creek automobile wheel spoke factory. He's found that one employee was John E. Morgan. Thinks some information may be in County archives. Even though google search has induced temporary strabismus, he's finding www is shrinking the world

Letter inspired by Steve Sanders' comment on spoke factory: "On Damrons Creek Reverent memories modern practices and another picture of key Adair County School District transportation employee Steve Sanders

Hi Ed!

Just read the articles and viewed the pictures of Steve Sanders and his farm, when the bit about the spoke factory caught my attention.

I know nothing about the factory except that it was "there" somewhere, and one of the employees was John E. Morgan. See Adair Co., KY Census for 1910. John was the husband of Sarah Belle Sanders, who was a grandaunt of Steve Sanders.

Chuck Hinman #160: Pew, I smell gasoline!

I can not remember a time when the Hinman men and boys didn't dress in their "Sunday best" when they went to Sunday School and church. Eighty some years later I still follow that same custom and have no intention of changing it.

Dad wore a suit and a Stetson hat. Bob's and my trousers were knee-high knickers with matching jackets. You rarely see that style anymore. Only kooky old men would dare to wear them today.

Tom Chaney No. 185. Nov. 30, 2008: Geraldine Brooks

Of Writers and Their Books. No. 185 The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks< br>Last week's column: Telling folks what not to read an essay by Tom Chaney on censorship

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

The People of the Book

When my sister and Bookstore partner Ann Matera says, "Tom, I just finished a book you need to read," I know there is a book I need to read pretty quick. It is not that, although born after me, she is older than I. She is. It's not that she can pack a pretty good wallop when roused up. She can. It's that she has, not only mighty good taste, but knows the nature and bounds of my own taste in reading.

So, when she said I ought to read The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks who won a Pulitzer Prize for her last novel March, I fell to with gusto and never looked back.

Now, with the same earnestness, but without the same clout, I urge you: I just finished a book you need to read.

Comment: Hinman Thanksgiving story was touching

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Mr. Hinman's story, A Memorable Hinman Thanksgiving was so touching. I have saved it for our mothers to read. They will recall the hard times back then when there were no Bail Outs, and families took care of each other.

God has been so good to our community this year.
