Steve Sanders: Remembering the spoke factory

2008-11-30 - Dunnville Road, District 1, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
STEVE SANDERS has 500 acres on Damron Creek Road. While bringing a proof of geographical significance over Ryan Beard's home on Dunnville Road, remembered another Damron's Creek historical fact: There was once a large spoke factory in the Damron's Creek community. "I had always thought the factory made the spokes for wagons or carriages," he said. "But now I'm learning that the factory made the spokes for some of the early car factories." A lot of people worked there he said. If anyone knows more about the Damron's Creek spoke factory, please send it to CM using a Contact/Submit Button.

Birds of America: Wood ducks at Montreat, NC

2008-11-30 - Montreat, NC - Photo by Phil Hanna.
Phil Hanna, Library Director at Lindsey Wilson College, sent these photos from Montreat, NC. He writes, "We were in Montreat, North Carolina, and saw a large group of wood ducks on Lake Susan," adding, "they are quite colorful." The top picture is the Assembly Inn overlooking Lake Susan. "Montreat is the conference center of the Presbyterian Church. It is outside of Asheville, NC. It is also where Billy Graham lives," Phil Hanna writes. The lower photo is one of the close ups of the beautiful waterfowl which Hanna was able to capture. A Today Feature picture.

On Damron's Creek: Reverent memories, modern practices

2008-11-30 - Damrons Creek, District 1, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Some of the magic of Damron's Creek draws from the juxtaposition of the ancient, the ghosts of recent past, and the very modern. This scene on the 500 acre Steve Sanders place shows the reference for the old, the old mule drawn plown, beside very modern round rolls. Over on the creek and in the woods, in the recent past, no more than a few decades ago, products rivaling the quality of the best libations of Brown-Forman were manufactured without sanction from or tribute to Washington, DC, compelling the High Sheriff and his men to terminate the enterprise. A Today Feature picture
