I can not remember a time when the Hinman men and boys didn't dress in their "Sunday best" when they went to Sunday School and church. Eighty some years later I still follow that same custom and have no intention of changing it.

Dad wore a suit and a Stetson hat. Bob's and my trousers were knee-high knickers with matching jackets. You rarely see that style anymore. Only kooky old men would dare to wear them today.

We wore knee-high argyle socks and high top dress shoes. We were so dressed-up looking we looked like we attended a parochial school.

Our suits were wool which meant they needed to be dry cleaned.

When the depression tears hit, we didn't have money for that expense so Mom, "made do" by frequently sponging our suits out in a bucket of pure old gasoline! Then she hung them out to dry (sometimes for days) to try to get the gasoline smell out.

It was an impossible task and I remember being taunted by other boys in our Sunday School class "Whee, I smell g-a-s-o-l-i-n-e"!

"I don't smell anything", I lied as my eyes watered denying the obvious.

It was a good thing, no one in the family smoked because we were the perfect setting for an untimely not to mention painful death burnt alive in our gasoline soaked Sunday suits!
More about the author: Mr. Hinman began to write memories for his kids when he was eighty and in 2005 self-published It's Just Me, a collection of seventy-five stories, including "The Thanksgiving" piece. Contact the author at: charles.hinman @sbcglobal.net. -CM
