ACHS Class of 1958 holds 50th Year Reunion

REUNONS
REUNION PHOTO

Forty-two members of the 1958 graduating class of ACHS attended a reunion last night at the old high school, now Adair Middle School.

Sixty-seven people attended. They came from Iraq, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. A delicious meal was enjoyed and all enjoyed memories from the past. Thanks to those who planned the event.

Everyone agreed it was a good idea to gather again in about five years. Ten deceased members of the class were recognized by lighting a candle in their memory. -DR. GARY LANE.

NP Georgeanna Grant helping medical effort in LA

Georgeanna Grant, daughter of Patty and Donnie Bunch of Glens Fork, Ky, is now in the hurricane zone in Louisiana, working with other medical personnel to take patients from hospitals and nursing homes out of harms way.

She has been gone since the end of last week and doesn't know when she will be coming home. She reports most things are running smoothly, but moving gravely ill people has not been without its undesired results.

Columbian Allen Owens writes My trip to Wrigley Field

He's now both a citizen of Adair County, KY, and Cub Nation. It was a vexing day getting from his semi parked in Aurora to 1065 West Addison, but it worth every ounce of the effort to reach Wrigley Field and get to sing the Cub Nation anthem, "Go Cubs Go", post victory, with 40,000 other Cubs fan.

By Allen Owens

I had it all planned out. I got loaded in Rochelle at about 8:30. I called my wife, and had her order me a ticket for the Cubs game against Philly. Game starts at 1:20. I had to drive about 47 miles to Aurora, park the semi, catch a taxi to the train station, and catch the 10:30 train to the city. Sounds good right?

I arrived in Aurora at about 9:45, I had already called a taxi to meet me. I parked the semi, and waited...and waited...and waited. Finally, at 10:10 I called this jerk again. He was chasing someone on foot that had stiffed him on a fare.

The Mystery of the Baseball Maple

Who left baseball glove i the trunk of the Red Maple in the back yard at Tucker's Station? Owners would like to know. Seedlings from mystery tree will be sold to benefit the Adair Garden Club
With photo of the Baseball Maple

By Barbara Armitage

Right after Wayne and I bought our house at Tuckers Station Farms in October of 2004 I discovered something unique about the huge Red Maple tree in our back yard. It stands watch over the house and yard, nobody seems to remember just how long the beautiful old tree has been here; my guess is somewhere near 50 or 60 years.

Letter: Samantha Frey's Forever wins kudos from SCC Visual Arts

Comment on seeing: Samantha Frey photo: Forever

To ColumbiaMagazine.comThis is one of the most beautiful pictures that I have seen on here so far. There have been many that have truly caught my breath but this is something that I would love to have framed and hanging on my wall.

The colors are contrasted perfectly. The wind appears to be blowing and the sky is brilliant with it's color and formation of the clouds. The old gray weathered barn setting asymmetrical in the photo sets it all off. Kudos to the photographer!

I am originally from Columbia and have now been living in Somerset for three years to be closer to my job. I work at Somerset Community College in the Visual Communication department, so I see hundreds of beautiful photos each year, but some of the ones that I find on Columbia Magazine have won my vote.

I never knew there were so many talented people residing in the hills and hollers of Adair county. Many thanks to Ed for displaying these fine works of art and for keeping this site up and going. It is a place that I visit often to stay updated and I always enjoy what is waiting for me when I click on this site.

s/Cindy Burton

Thanks for putting so well what so many of us felt on seeing the photograph. Her succinct caption was eloquent, too. -CM

Remembering Elva Firquin England: A special lady

Comment on reading: Obituary: Elva England

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Ms Elva was indeed a special lady. She had a wonderful smile and was always so pleasant. My late husband Billy and Ms Elva had a special friendship; every Sunday morning at Trinity he went straight to her and got what we referred to as his "Ms Elva sugars". It was wonderful to watch how both of their faces would light up. I feel certain that Billy got his Ms Elva sugars Sunday morning. Having her as a friend was certainly a blessing and something to be thankful for. She will be missed.

Yard sales are about getting together with neighbors

By Barbara Armitage

Saturday morning I drug myself out of bed at o'dark thirty filled my pockets with quarters and one dollar bills and headed out in search of treasures at the annual Labor Day City wide yard sales.

My very first stop yielded new crib sized sheets for the toddler beds my puppies sleep on - then I found a lovely old Kelly green bottle just right for my bottle tree and my expenditures were still under $2.00.

Yard Sale drew buyers from Edmonton to New York City

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks so much for helping advertise our huge yard sale. It was wonderul. I think most of our towns people came by, plus we had some from Edmonton, and Burkesville. One car load was from New York City. It was fun visiting with everyone, the sales were great. We also had a couple come by from Louisville that were in town to a family reunion. They were friends of ours from days of long ago. The items we had left after the sale went to help those in need. Thanks again for running the ad.s/Alice Wheeler
