Columbian Allen Owens writes My trip to Wrigley Field

He's now both a citizen of Adair County, KY, and Cub Nation. It was a vexing day getting from his semi parked in Aurora to 1065 West Addison, but it worth every ounce of the effort to reach Wrigley Field and get to sing the Cub Nation anthem, "Go Cubs Go", post victory, with 40,000 other Cubs fan.

By Allen Owens

I had it all planned out. I got loaded in Rochelle at about 8:30. I called my wife, and had her order me a ticket for the Cubs game against Philly. Game starts at 1:20. I had to drive about 47 miles to Aurora, park the semi, catch a taxi to the train station, and catch the 10:30 train to the city. Sounds good right?

I arrived in Aurora at about 9:45, I had already called a taxi to meet me. I parked the semi, and waited...and waited...and waited. Finally, at 10:10 I called this jerk again. He was chasing someone on foot that had stiffed him on a fare.

Well, I took off walking, flagged a fella down at the red light, and asked him to give me a ride to the train station. He said okay, as long as I gave him $10. So much for people being nice anymore. As we were turning onto North Aurora Road, I saw the train pulling out of the station.

I called Enterprise rental cars, They were at the train station and said there no problem to rent me a car. I got the new guy from Enterprise and he got us lost taking me to my truck to get my phone charger. Finally, I told him to just take me to the train station. The next train leaves at 12:28 for the city.

Dude sharing train seat missed train

I caught the train at 12:28. I sat next to a dude who was headed to a soccer tournament. Nice fella, turns out he was an athletic trainer. He worked for a company that provided medical personnel to athletic events. He had a very interesting story. He used to work for the St. Louis Cardinals. I told him that I was sorry. He missed the joke. I am a die-hard Cubs fan. Anyway, he had some great stories to pass the time. We arrived at Central Station at 1:42.

I had to travel 6 city blocks, somehow to get to the red line that would take me to Addison for the game. I started running up Adams street, good thing I quit smoking about a month ago. I ran all the way to State street where I made a quick right and flew down the stairs into the belly of the city.

Chicagoans really have Cubs fever this year

I caught the red line, saw a couple of preppy types who went to DePaul. I conversed with some of the other passengers until the red line finally reached Wrigley Field. It is amazing how many Chicagoans are really caught up with Cubs fever this year! I guess that is easy since they are the best team in baseball.

I reached the Addison stop, I flew off the train and there she was, in all her glory...the most beautiful sight I had ever saw...the place that had not celebrated for 100 years...the address at 1065 West Addison that had seen many dreams fade away...Wrigley Field.

1908 was the last World Championship for the Cubs

There have been many Cub fans that have never witnessed a championship in these friendly confines. 1908 was the last time that this team had won a World Series! All Cub fans across the world are hoping that the 2008 team, which seems to have all the right pieces, can win this coveted prize.

By the time I reached the ticket window, and got my ticket I was out of breath. I ran into the stadium, then it hit me. I felt my eyes start to well up. I was in awe, here I was in the greatest baseball stadium in America. I have had many memories of this place. I have attended many games in this glorious baseball park.

By the time I reached seat 10 in row 11 of section 101, we were losing 2-0. No problem, the Cubs have come from behind 38 times this season to win. This year has a different aroma, this team, as well as its fans, feels like there is nothing that can stop us from reaching our destiny. A World Series championship!

Soriano sent one into left field bleachers

As the game progressed, the home team tied the score at 2. Then here came the hero at the plate... #12... Alfonso Soriano... He hit a pitch into the left field bleachers to put us ahead 3-2. Carlos Marmol pitched the 8th, and 9th to close out the Phillies.

Cubs Win! Cubs Win! The highlight of the afternoon was singing Go Cubs Go, with all of the other 40,000 Cub fans in Cub Nation.

I am so happy to be a Cubs fan! Go Cubs Go!!!
