Scenic Adair Co, KY: Before the picture show started

2008-03-02 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo By Pen.
ACTIVITY IN THE EVENINGS is not nearly what it was in the 1940s and 1950s, but is busier now than in decades past. This scene was taken in early evening, before the picture show started at the Columbian Theatre. The lighted columns of the Columbia Baptist Church, center, looking out Greensburg Street, dominates the scene here.

A real life parable of today, Sunday, March 2, 2008

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Id like to say thank you to Deputy Sheriff Charles Greer of the Adair County Sheriffs Department for coming to my rescue this morning. Without his help I might have been standing out in the cold rain for a long time.

I was down by the lake at Plum Point loading wood chips to use in the garden when the electronic lock on my truck door decided not to work. I was locked out and to make matters worse, theres no cell phone service down there.

Tom Chaney reviews Whistle Stops; March 2, 2008

Of Writers and Their Books (149): Wilson Wyatt, Sr.

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

"Wilson W. Wyatt, Sr."
Wilson Watkins Wyatt, Sr., age 80, published a memoir of his public life [Whistle Stops: Adventures in Public Life, The University Press of Kentucky, 1985].

In that memoir of some half-century of public service Wyatt hews carefully to the line between excessive modesty and over weaning arrogance. Too much of the former and we would not have a vital account of a man who strode large on the local, state, national, and world stage from mayor of Louisville in 1941 to being chosen special envoy to Indonesia for President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Too much of the latter and we have the self-serving egotism of an Albert Benjamin Chandler.

On the Front Porch with my Grandpa, Earl Conover

PHOTO

A granddaughter remembers a very special man, and wonderful Sunday visits with him, and the wonderful smell of pipe tobacco there

By Heather Jasper

When I was younger I remember going to my grandparents house and no matter what the weather, if it was sunny or snowing, my grandpa would be sitting on the front porch smoking his pipe. The front porch always smelled like pipe tobacco, so pipe tobacco is a very comforting smell to me. It reminds me of my grandpa, and growing up near him.

CM SITE NOTE: Contact info a must with classifieds

ColumbiaMagazine.com CLASSIFIEDS

We received more than one letter about a classified ad which did not contain enough contact information.

Typical of the requests was this one: "There is no number or way of contacting 'Ruby' for the mobile home listed under the real estate for sale section. Hard way to get in touch with her. Please help? Thanks!"

We received no contact information on the ad, but usually, when this happens, the person who posts the ad will contact us immediately to say they forgot. This did not happen with the following ad:
"House trailer for sale
"Three bedroom, 2 bath with covered front porch and small back porch with .54 acre lot in Flatwoods area. Immediate possession. Asking $18,500. Ruby."
In all likelihood, the omission of the phone number was an oversight, but the ad has been deleted, but will be reposted if a completely new submission is made with complete contact information is received.

As a policy, we will discard any submission which does not contain email and telephone number. If the information is not to be posted, just let us know.

ColumbiaMagazine.com classifieds work, finding real estate agents and selling property, getting people to yard sales, finding people to hire, finding and placing pets. Most categories are free.
