Casey County gets Rubber Mulch Projects grant

Casey was one of 23 counties to be awarded grant monies for projects using recycled rubber. $17,957 will be given to the City of Liberty, Lake Liberty Park for picnic tables and a wheelchair accessible picnic table.

The grants are from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, established by the 1998 General Assembly, which receives $2 from the retail sale of each new tire in the state. The fund helps manage the approximately 5 million scrap tires generated in Kentucky each year and promotes the development of markets for recycled tire products.

Kentuckians encouraged to be REAL ID Ready

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - Will your license fly? That's the question state officials urge Kentuckians to ask themselves as only one year remains before federal REAL ID Act enforcement starts on May 7, 2025. After that date, a REAL ID state-issued driving or identity credential or another federally accepted form of REAL ID, like a passport, will be required for air travel checkpoints or access to military bases or federal buildings that require identification.

"We want Kentuckians to be able to board a domestic flight or visit a loved one stationed on a military base without any snags in their plans, and taking the time now to make sure you have a form of REAL ID to ensure you can get to where you need to go," Gov. Andy Beshear said. "With many acceptable forms of REAL ID available, like a REAL ID driver's license, military ID or passport, Kentuckians have several options to travel."

State-issued REAL ID driving and identity credentials must be requested in person at any Driver Licensing Regional Office operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), including the one in Columbia.

The Whitehurst Diaries: April Retrospective

By Sharon Whitehurst

Whan that April with his showres soote
The droughte of March hath perced to the root

The first phrase of the Prologue to The Canterbury Tales has stuck in my ragbag mind, though I recall little more of that English 12 assignment.

I've marveled through the years at the phrases that have taken up lodging in my mind, words that swirl and surface when least expected: disconnected bits from English literature; a verse from an old hymn; the annoying repetition of a song blaring from a radio; sonorous phrases from the King James Bible.

Keep that water handy for replacing fluids

During a day of normal activity, the body needs about two quarts of liquid to replace lost body fluids. About 48 ounces should come from drinking water and other hydrating beverages. The remainder, about two cups, comes from solid foods.

When exercising, 1/2 to 1 quart of fluids per hour is required to replace fluid lost from sweat during moderate physical activity. In addition, it's important to drink water before starting non-exercise outdoor activities, such as gardening.

KSP assist with shooting investigation after collision on Hwy 704

From Trooper Jonathan Houk

On Saturday, May 11, 2024 at approximately 7:55amCT, The Kentucky State Police (KSP) received a call from the Adair County Sheriff's Office requesting investigative assistance with a vehicle collision and shooting that occurred on KY 704 in Adair County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Gregory Willis, age 50 of Columbia, and Mark Hatcher, age 46 of Columbia, were involved in a vehicle collision on KY 704. Immediately after the collision, Mr. Willis armed himself with a firearm and discharged it, striking Mr. Hatcher. A passenger in Mr. Hatcher's vehicle, William Feese, age 23 of Columbia, was also injured during the vehicle collision. Both Mr. Hatcher and Mr. Feese were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Mr. Willis fled from the scene prior to law enforcement's arrival and a search for him ensued.

As a result of the preliminary investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Gregory Willis for Assault 1st Degree. On May 11, 2024 at approximately 1:56pmCT, Troopers located Mr. Willis in a wooded area on Paul Frankum Road in Adair County. Mr. Willis was arrested without incident by Trooper Jake Smith and charged with Assault 1st Degree. Mr. Willis was lodged in the Adair County Detention Center.

A closer look at the Mesa Verde dwellings

2024-05-13 - Mesa Verde National Park - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
A closer look at the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings. For more than 700 years, a civilization lived and flourished here, eventually building elaborate stone communities in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. Then, in the late A.D. 1200s, in the span of a generation or two, they left their homes and moved away. Mesa Verde National Park preserves a spectacular reminder of this ancient culture.

Congratulations to Sgt. Major Dan Kermeen

Pam Kermeen of Columbia writes, "We would like to announce the promotion of our son Daniel Kermeen to Sgt. Major on April 15, 2024 in Okinawa, Japan."

Pam says that after Dan graduated from Adair County High School, he "went to work at IMO and desperately wanted full-time with them. They kept putting him off so he went to Louisville and enlisted with the Marines. IMO offered him full-time the next day! The recruiter came to the house the day after Christmas in 2006 and the rest is history."

Kermeen began his military career in late 2006 at Parris Island, South Carolina, and has steadily gained experience and responsibility from there, at bases in Missouri, Haiti, Korea, and Japan.

In late 2023 First Sergeant Kermeen assumed the duties of Company First Sergeant for Truck Company, and he was soon after selected for promotion to Sergeant Major. In April 2024 he was promoted to his current rank and is set to assume the duties as Squadron Sergeant Major for Marine Air Support Squadron 2 in May 2024.

Sergeant Major Kermeen's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with (2) gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with (3) gold stars, and the Good Conduct Medal with (4) bronze stars.

Beyond his military service, Sergeant Major Kermeen finds strength and support in his family. He is married to Tavon Kermeen, and together they have two children, Dyllon and Kaileigh.

Reed & Coffey, Undertakers, 1898

By JIM

Reed & Coffey, Undertakers, opened in Columbia the late winter of 1898, and the first ad for the business appeared in the March 2 edition of the Adair County News. The following week, the paper mentioned that "Reed & Coffey, who have just started in the undertaker's business, had the call for caskets last week. It takes them but a few minutes to have a burial case ready, neatly finished."

The principals were Mr. Edgar (E.W.) Reed and Mr. Robert Graves (R.G.) Coffey.

The ad imaged here ran for about 10 consecutive weeks; after that, no mention of the firm appeared until autumn of the following year.

R.G. Coffey removed to Texas around the middle of October 1899 for health considerations and three weeks later, a one-sentence news item stated that "Messrs. Reed & Coffey, undertakers, have sold their stock of goods to Capt. W.W. Bradshaw and have gone out of business."

(Mr. Bradshaw and Mr. J.B. Jones had opened an undertaking establishment in Columbia about 1896. In 1909, Mr. Bradshaw sold his interest in the firm to Mr. Jones, who continued in the business for another dozen years or so.)

John Muir's Exploration in Kentucky

The public is invited to a presentation on John Muir's walk through Kentucky by Marco Sioli, a professor of American history visiting from University of Milan in Italy, at 11:30amCT on Wednesday May 29, 2024, at the historic Trabue-Russell House in Columbia. Phil Hanna recommends the article below as an excellent introduction to Muir's historic journey.

By Ken Johnson
November 24, 2020, bernheim.org

John Muir was one of the most significant environmentalists in U.S. history and the world. He was instrumental in establishing Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks and the Petrified Forest National Monument (now a National Park) and helped found the Sierra Club. Muir was influential in making the preservation of our national lands a focus of congressmen and presidents. He was an advisor to President Theodore Roosevelt, who traveled to Yosemite to camp with Muir and seek his counsel.

Born in Scotland in 1838, young John Muir moved with his family to Wisconsin in 1849. He took college courses in botany and chemistry at the University of Wisconsin- Madison and became deeply interested in the natural world, an interest that would be the focus of his life. After leaving college and Wisconsin, Muir spent several years in Ontario, Canada, working in a combination sawmill and rake factory.

In 1866, he moved to Indianapolis where he worked in a wagon wheel factory. The following year, he severely injured his right eye in an industrial accident and was blind in both eyes for a time. Despite this serious injury, he regained his sight and was determined to make a journey which would change his life and ultimately would set him on a course to change the country.

John Muir decided to take a walk. A very, very long walk. Ultimately 1,000 miles from Louisville to the Gulf of Mexico.

Sign requested in Veterans Memorial Park

A reader who asked to remain anonymous writes, "Out here on 55 S. Morrison Road, Columbia Veterans Memorial Park, where the flag is flying and little kiddie slide stuff is -- drivers seem like they can't easily see the kids playing.

"Kids are running across, little bitty ones who can barely walk, and some on little tiny bicycles with parents trying to grab them to keep the cars and trucks from running over them.

I think the City should put a big sign that shows up at night as well as in daytime: CHILDREN AT PLAY."
