Janis Fox, 90, Casey County, KY (1932-2022)

Janis Fox, a proud lifelong resident of Dunnville, Kentucky, was welcomed home by Jesus on August 23, 2022. Life for Janis, or "Nano" as she was affectionately known, revolved around her love of her family. Supporting the Casey Rebels, UK Basketball, Sunday morning church services, the family farm, Lake Cumberland, truck pulls and softball games, whatever they loved, she loved.

For decades Janis' smile and kind words welcomed Lake Cumberland's many travelers as they made their way through her turnstile in Russell Springs along the Cumberland Parkway.

Governor announces $25M to plug orphan wells across KY

Frankfort, KY - On August 25, 2022, as part of his Better Kentucky Plan Stronger Communities Program, Gov. Andy Beshear announced a $25 million grant to plug orphan oil and gas wells across the commonwealth. The initiative is expected to create 180 jobs.

Velma F. (Green) Rooks, 94, Columbia, KY native (1928-2022)

Velma F. Rooks of Taylorsville, Indiana passed away on August 24, 2022 at Millers Merry Manor in Hope, Indiana. She was 94 years old.

A funeral service will be conducted by Reverends Mark Polston, Danny Bailey, and Ken Green at 1pmET on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Edinburgh Separate Baptist Church, 905 S Main St, Edinburgh, IN. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh.

Calling will be from 11amET until time of service at 1pmET.

Adair Co. Schools campus gets LIVE Weather Station

The Adair County High School WeatherSTEM station went live last week. The system sends real-time, local weather info, keeps a record of all data collected, and provides STEM-based curriculum for students.

WeatherSTEM's real-time temperature and lightning reporting can help ensure the safety of student athletes on campus.

Jason Rector, DTC/CIO for Adair County Schools, says, "Many thanks to Craig Biggs and Rebecca Cravens making it happen for the district." According to Rector, incoming District Athletic Director Craig Biggs was familiar with the system when he was with WKU, and was a catalyst behind the recommendation of the system on the local school campus.

Irene L. Newby, 71, Crocus, KY (1951-2022)

Irene L. Newby of the Crocus community died on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. She was 71 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 1pmCT on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Rev. Albert Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Holt Cemetery in Russell County.

Visitation is requested after 11amCT on Tuesday.

CU hosting Latin American and Hispanic traveling art exhibit

Campbellsville, KY - Campbellsville University is hosting a traveling exhibit featuring artwork from Hispanic, Latinx and Latin American Kentuckians.

Azucena "Susie" Trejo Williams, associate professor of Art and Design at the university, will have artwork shown in The Pence-Chowning Art Gallery, 205 University Drive, Campbellsville, through Thursday, September 8, 2022, as part of the traveling exhibit, titled "Our Kentucky Home: Hispanice/Latin American Visual Art in the Commonwealth."

Worldwide Technologies expanding in Glasgow

Frankfort, KY - On August 25, 2022, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the continued momentum of the state's manufacturing sector as Worldwide Technologies LLC, a manufacturer of precision machined parts, will invest over $1.2 million and create 16 quality jobs with a new facility in Glasgow.

The new facility in Barren County will see an investment of over $1.2 million that will include site improvements and new welding equipment. The location will boost the company's production of precision machined products, including heavy truck, defense and medical parts. The project comes in response to growing business opportunities for the company. The investment also will create 16 quality jobs for residents of Glasgow and Barren County.

The new location is the second announced in Kentucky by Worldwide Technologies within the past 16 months. In 2021, the company announced a $1.42 million investment in Greensburg creating 25 full-time jobs.

Alex Hill, 32, Russell County, KY (1989-2022)

Alexander "Alex" Hill, of Russell Springs, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at his home. He was 32 years of age.

Alex was born October 7, 1989, in Somerset. He worked with his dad, Curtis, in the family's business, Hill's Toilet Rental and Septic Service. Alex loved spending time with his Bethany. He enjoyed playing with his two dogs, Bear and Hog, that he thought of as "his kids". He loved driving his Dodge truck and leaving black smoke and tire marks behind.

Marketta and Gary Dubree are now located in Tompkinsville but had the Red Barn BBQ restaurant on Hudson Street before a fire in the building caused their relocation.

State releases county unemployment data for July 2022

Frankfort, KY - Unemployment rates fell in 117 counties between July 2021 and July 2022 and rose in three, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet. Locally, unemployment fell both month-to-month and year-to-year in Adair and all surrounding counties, with Cumberland continuing to post one of the lowest unemployment rates in Kentucky.

General Assembly unveils Eastern Kentucky flood relief package

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky lawmakers unveiled a nearly $212 million relief package on Wednesday to aid communities in Eastern Kentucky still reeling from the devastating floods that claimed dozens of lives last month.

The proposed relief package is broken down as follows:
  • $115 million to the military affairs budget unit in the Division of Emergency Management,
  • $40 million to the operations and support services budget unit in the Department of Education,
  • $45 million to the highways budget unit in the Transportation Cabinet to repair roads and bridges,
  • and $12 million in ARPA funds to repair water and sewer infrastructure.
The House and Senate gaveled into the first day of what is expected to be a three-day special session focused on emergency funding and recovery efforts in at least 11 counties affected by the record flooding.
