Taylor, Metcalfe could qualify for Teen Driver funds By Erin G. Eggen/Jonathan Greene Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) has received $21,981 from the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford, and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), to improve teen driver safety throughout Kentucky. Funding will be used for the Kentucky Checkpoints parent-teen driver program administered by the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC) and the Kentucky Safety Prevention Alignment Network (KSPAN). According to KIPRC's Dr. Ashley Bush, all counties are eligible to receive the Kentucky Checkpoints program. However, the Ford Driving Skills grant of $21,981 will be used to provide training and financial support for up to 15 counties with the highest teen driver-related crashes, deaths and injury-related emergency department visits. Metcalfe and Taylor are the only local counties on the eligibility list. "While the Kentucky Checkpoints program is available to anyone, this grant enables us to provide funds to selected counties to help supplement training expenses such as advertising costs, staff time, training room rental and/or travel expenses," said Bush. "These funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we strongly encourage anyone interested in championing the program in their area to contact us as soon as possible." Update on Columbia Veterans Project By Tiffany Collins The City of Columbia will be placing veteran flags around the Square (and, one square off of the square) starting this Memorial Day. The project honors local veterans from World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War, along with other veterans. "We were initially planning for eight banners, and, due to demand, increased it to sixteen," say Mayor Pamela Hoots. "We again increased the number to thirty-two banners and that number is now full." The City would like to recognize Ronnie Holt, with the local VFW, who has been assisting with the project. "Without his help we could have not done this," said Mayor Hoots. The banner procurement has been stopped for this time due to the high demand and to get the initial project completed. "We hope to be able to do add more veterans at a later date," Hoots noted. 2022-03-07 09:42:32 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Veterans and Veterans Day
