ACES Academic Team named Region 10 Champions! From Alice Curry, Technology Teacher & STC Adair County Elementary School Adair County Elementary School Academic Team participants competed Monday, February 28, and Saturday, March 5, 2022, in Region 10 Governor's Cup at Joe Harrison Carter Elementary School in Tompkinsville, Kentucky. The region was composed of four districts with a culmination of twenty schools. Adair County Elementary School (ACES) finished with top honors in Regional play, claiming the title of first overall Region 10 champions. Other accomplishments included placing first place out of eight teams in Future Problem Solving (FPS), coached by Mrs. Jeana Pike. ACES Quick Recall Team, coached by Mrs. Lisa Newell-Hare, also placed first out of eight teams. The accomplished team had eight individual winners in the Written Assessment competitions and was selected for the Hume Sportsmanship Award, which is voted on by all Regional teams. "With the participants practicing since September, it has been exciting to see their hard work end in great success," says Lisa Newell-Hare. "Our students have to be disciplined to put in countless hours practicing and studying for these competitions. Their parents and guardians deserve praise for their dedication in making sure studying takes place at home outside of practice sessions. The Regional ACES Academic Team was composed of nineteen members: Riley Andrew, Christopher Armenti, Alaynah Bayuk, Madison Burkhardt, Addison Chapman, Elaine Cook, Lily Coots, Wiley Feese, Chloe Grider, RyAnna Hale, Rocky Klingberg, Suzy Kotter, Patrick Oliver, Bentley Petty, Ellie Staten, Mia Stephens, Cole Stockton, Pierce Stotts, and Maddie Wethington. The winning FPS team featured Riley Andrew, Lily Coots, Chloe Grider, RyAnna Hale, Suzy Kotter, Bentley Petty, Mia Stephens, Cole Stockton, and Pierce Stotts. Their topic for the competition was "Insects." "Participating in FPS requires students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills," says Pike, who focuses her coaching duties on FPS. "They've worked hard to learn and apply the six-step creative problem-solving model to complex issues facing society today. I am happy for this group of students and their accomplishments this season." First place individual winners for ACES include Christopher Armenti (Science), Elaine Cook (Arts & Humanities), and Patrick Oliver (Social Studies). Other top-five finishers were Riley Andrew (2nd in Arts & Humanities), Christopher Armenti (2nd in Social Studies), Patrick Oliver (2nd in Mathematics), Ellie Staten (3rd in Language Arts), and Cole Stockton (5th in Arts & Humanities). One of the most competitive portions of the competition Saturday was the Quick Recall event. ACES won all four matches they competed in. "I was extremely proud of how well they persevered in a long day of competitions against other strong teams," says Newell-Hare. "They went into the competition with a positive attitude, encouraging their own teammates, as well as their opponents." Quick Recall team members were Alaynah Bayuk, Madison Burkhardt, Addison Chapman, Wiley Feese, RyAnna Hale, Rocky Klingberg, Suzy Kotter, Patrick Oliver, Cole Stockton, Pierce Stotts, and Maddie Wethington. The regional competition is the highest level for the elementary Governor's Cup, which brings the season to an end. "We are extremely proud of this year's participants and celebrate their success with them. We will be ready for next season and look forward to working with our next team" Newell-Hare says. The schools representing Region 10 included District 36 with Austin Tracy Elementary, Caverna Elementary, Hiseville Elementary, Park City Elementary, and North Jackson Elementary. The schools representing District 37 included Eastern Elementary, Hiseville Elementary, Red Cross Elementary, South Green Elementary, and Temple Hill Elementary. District 38 was composed of Adair County Elementary, Jamestown Elementary, Metcalfe Elementary, Russell Springs Elementary, and Salem Elementary. The schools in District 39 included Clinton County Middle School, Cumberland County Elementary, Gamaliel Elementary, Joe Harrison Carter Elementary, and Tompkinsville Elementary.
