Extreme caution urged for home generator use

From Emory Kidd, Metcalfe County EMS Director

Homeowners who run generators during a power outage should take extra precautions to avoid injury. Gasoline or diesel fuel powered generators can produce potentially deadly levels of carbon monoxide and should be operated only in well-ventilated, covered, unheated areas - never inside.

- Make sure the generator is listed by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriter's Laboratory (UL).

- Protect the generator from exposure to rain, but under no circumstances should generators be used indoors, including a garage. Do not operate the generator near any open windows or doorways.

The Weather Outside is Frightful... or Soon Will Be

By Mike Watson

The weather outside is frightful one more time, or so it will be in a few hours. Temperatures dropping into the teens, with snow, sleet, ice. Who wants to go out in that type weather, but often it is a necessity. In the past the weather has been, at times, frightful.

We in Kentucky have had plenty of snow and ice in winters past and the professionals are anticipating a cold, icy, white weekend beginning any hour now. When the white plague is on the ground, even if it is not a record in any way, cabin fever and the accompanying symptoms seem to overtake so many of us that open rebellion comes into the minds of many.

Here are a few weather notes assembled from nearly forty-five years of research into Adair County's past:

KYTC: District 8 crews preparing for challenging winter storm

By Amber Hale

Somerset, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 highway crews have been preparing for several days to respond to the winter storm expected to impact the region with a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, ice and snow.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for rain gradually transitioning over to a wintry mix of freezing rain in the District 8 region Thursday afternoon and lasting into Friday. The expected ice and arctic temperatures will create difficult to impossible travel conditions.

Damage to trees and power lines is likely - a condition that poses its own dangers to KYTC crews and can delay road response work. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid any unnecessary travel.

KYTC District 8 crews have spent this week replenishing material supplies, sharpening chainsaws, and preparing equipment for response to the winter weather event. Rain throughout today will prohibit pre-treating of area highways in advance of the approaching winter system.

By Sherelle Roberts-Pierre

Frankfort, KY - As of Jan. 1, Kentuckians who receive surprise medical bills now have protection against those bills.

Through the federal No Surprises Act, excessive out-of-pocket costs are restricted, and emergency services are covered without any prior authorization, regardless of whether a provider or facility is in-network.

The law applies to health insurance plans starting in 2022, including self-insured health plans that employers offer as well as plans from health insurance companies.

Tyson Foods breaks ground for new bacon plant in BG

$355 million facility will produce Wright and Jimmy Dean brand bacon

By Crystal Staley/Brandon Mattingly

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, Gov. Andy Beshear joined leaders from Tyson Foods and local officials in Warren County to break ground on Tyson's new $355 million bacon production facility, which will create 450 jobs and meet growing demand for the company's iconic Wright and Jimmy Dean brands.

Officials broke ground on the 400,000-square-foot manufacturing operation in the Kentucky Transpark, which represents the single largest investment in a new facility in Bowling Green. The new Tyson location will produce Jimmy Dean and Wright brand bacon, known globally for its hand trimmed and thick cut, real wood smoked bacon. The new facility is expected to create 450 jobs with production beginning in late 2023.

Public Notice: 2022 Primary Election workers needed

For more information about becoming a poll worker, please call The Adair Co Clerk's Office at 270-384-2801 or send an email to Lisa.Greer@ky.gov. Please respond as soon as possible.

By Lisa Greer, Adair County Clerk

The Adair County Board of elections needs your help with the May 2022 Primary Election.

When we submitted our election plan for Adair County last year, we submitted 16 precinct locations open as normal. But in order to have those precincts open we have to have the workers. We cannot run elections without Poll Workers. They are the most fundamental piece of the process. Finding workers can not wait until the last minute. If we are short on election workers for the 2022 Primary, we may have to change our Election Plan and this decision will need to be done by the end of February.

To operate all 16 precincts, we will need 80 workers. We need four workers plus alternate workers at each precinct. Alternates come in at last minute to replace the poll workers in case of sickness, etc. Each worker and alternate have to be trained and ready to work.

We encourage registered voters of Adair County to serve their community as poll workers.

How prepared are we for the predicted storm?

After every disaster - and we've had our share of them from tornadoes to blizzards in the recent months - makes us aware of the need to be prepared to be without. We see the stories of neighbors helping neighbors, not to mention people coming in to help others in their area.

This story gives us important considerations to help us get ready for the predicted ice storm tonight. The long-standing FEMA recommendation is to be self-sufficient for 72 hours - how prepared is your house?
