Supreme Court suspends in-person services through May 1

Adair County Circuit Court Clerk Dennis Loy sends the following extension from Chief Justice Minton, extending the suspension of in-person services at court facilities through May 1.

By John D. Minton, Jr.
Chief Justice of Kentucky

In anticipation of a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Supreme Court issued new amendments today that strengthen the social-distancing order that has been in place in courts statewide since March 16. The order restricts dockets, jury trials and jury service during the pandemic.

Administrative Order 2020-16, dated April 1, 2020, replaces in its entirety Administrative Order 2020-13, dated March 26, 2020. The new amendments are in effect through May 1 and provide that:

On This Date: LWC Baseball stole doubleheader from CU in 2017

By Brady Budke

With the cancelation of the 2020 spring season, we are taking a look back at past Blue Raider athletic achievements. On April 1, 2017, the Lindsey Wilson baseball team pulled out a pair of one-run victories to defeat rival Campbellsville University in a doubleheader at Egnew Park.

The Blue Raiders took game one of the series by a final of 6-5. Despite never trailing in the contest and holding a 6-3 lead heading into the ninth inning, it took a strong finishing effort to set down a final Tiger surge. The win in game one ended a five-game skid against Campbellsville that dated back to the 2015 season.

Game two was a low scoring affair, but saw Lindsey Wilson pull out a 2-1 victory to complete the sweep. Both teams traded single runs in the third inning, but an RBI single by Antonio Dorado in the sixth inning broke the tie and eventually gave the Blue Raiders the victory.

Letter: tips for managing delivered meals

Joyce Coomer writes:

I know that the schools are delivering meals on a daily basis, and I'm sure other people are also delivering meals. If anyone is worried about contracting COVID-19 yet wishes to deliver meals, here are a few steps that can be utilized (in addition to the common sense ones of wearing a mask and gloves while preparing the food).

Contact the person(s) to whom you are delivering meals and request that they come to the door when you arrive, but do not open the door. You can set the food on their doorstep then return to your vehicle. After you have returned to your vehicle (or are six feet away), the person receiving the food can then open the door and take the food inside.

This limits person-to-person contact, keeps a barrier (the door) between the person receiving and the person delivering the food, and hopefully limits the spread of COVID-19. - Joyce

Campbellsville, KY - While the challenges of COVID-19 reign paramount across the United States, a group of generous university donors, along with a group of Campbellsville University administrators and faculty who have united to teach courses pro bono, have paved the way for a newly generated 8-week academic term, known as C-Term, that will launch April 6, 2020.

KDA relaxing food bank guidelines

Income guidelines relaxed from 130 to 185 percent to qualify

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) is temporarily relaxing income requirements through April 30 to allow more Kentuckians to receive food from food banks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This is an extremely tough time for many Kentuckians who have lost their jobs or had their income slashed because of the coronavirus pandemic," Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles said. "Our citizens have enough to worry about than where their next meal will come from. This action by the KDA's Division of Food Distribution will allow more Kentuckians to be eligible to receive food from food banks."

The KDA requested an increase in the income guidelines from 130 to 185 percent to qualify to get food through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). The U.S. Department of Agriculture expedited the KDA's request on March 31, taking only about an hour to approve it.

Second case of COVID-19 confirmed in Adair County

By Gale B. Cowan
Adair County Judge Executive

I have just been notified by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department that Adair County now has 2 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Virus. The only information that has been given to me is that both patients are self isolating in their homes and the LCDHD has completed their case investigation and wrapping up the close contact investigations. They have asked high risk close contacts to quarantine.

I told the people of Adair County that I would keep you informed as I know more and this is what I intend to do. But, at the same time, I ask that you respect people's privacy and don't jump to conclusions. Make sure your information is accurate before you share false information. Do your part to combat this disease. Stay Home if possible or only go out for essential items. Wash your hands and cough/sneeze into your elbow or tissue.

Please keep both of these individuals and their families along with our community in your prayers.

Commentary: Kentuckians must be Watchmen at the Wall

By Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron

Frankfort, KY - In a matter of weeks, the novel coronavirus ("COVID-19") has changed the way that we live our lives in the Commonwealth and throughout our country. Days spent at school and work have been replaced with online classroom sessions and conference calls. Homes have become makeshift offices and classrooms, as we all try to retain some semblance of normalcy in a situation that is far from normal.

Despite the anxiety and uncertainty generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kentuckians are coming together and proving that our state motto, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall," is a creed that we take seriously in times of crisis.

We're ordering takeout and purchasing online from local businesses. Young adults are picking up prescriptions and groceries for their elderly neighbors. Healthcare workers, first responders, and law enforcement are putting their own health at risk to make sure our communities are safe.

These are just a few in a long list of examples of how Kentuckians are coming together to support one another in these challenging times.

Mr. White scourges Sir Groundhog

By JIM

Melvin White, a native of the Gadberry section, departed Adair County for North Carolina at an early age, and with the exception of a year or two teaching in Carroll County, Missouri, he spent the rest of his life in the Tar Heel state. Still, he remained a son of the Auld Sod at heart, and his loquacious letters, laced with humor, well-seasoned with dry wit, and tinged with longing reminisces of his earlier years, frequently graced the pages of The News from its inception in late 1897 until his passing nearly 35 years later.

One such letter, date-lined Shelby, N.C., April 2, 1930, appeared in the April 8 edition of the newspaper. In this particular missive, Mr. White took up the lash of the wordsmith to thoroughly scourge Sir Groundhog, the proxy of Everyman's favorite whipping boy, the weather. Thus spake he:
