Census forms have arrived in the mail

2020-03-14 - Columbia - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The 2020 Census forms came in the mail Saturday, March 14, and a message on the outside of the envelope reminds us "...your response is required by law." The options are to fill out and return the form which takes about 10 minutes, or go to the website listed and fill out the form online. It is important to document the information requested so that we get full count, full opportunities in future for funding of roads and schools, hospitals, etc. If we don't respond by one of these two ways, in April a Census Taker will come knocking on the door.

Letter: Trinity UMC cancels Sunday service

Dear Trinity UMC Members, Attendees and the Adair County Community,

Reluctantly, but obediently and lovingly, I am cancelling all activities at church for two weeks in order to protect the health of our members, attendees and community. Honestly, I had initially planned to hold two weeks of combined worship services at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday.

But this morning, having read a very appropriate letter from our Bishop, I will follow his strong request that we cancel worship services and activities at church.

Ticks have arrived - inspections a possibility?

Joyce M. Coomer

Yesterday afternoon I found a tick on one of my cats. Yesterday evening I found a tick on me. That got me to thinking . . .

There are several people in the county who, like myself, live alone. Some live in town, and some in the country. Ticks are present both places, and no matter how limber someone may be it is difficult, even with the use of a mirror, to thoroughly check your backside, top to bottom, for ticks, then remove a tick if one is there.

As a community service, would it be possible for medical facilities to provide free tick inspections for those of us who live alone? It doesn't require medical training to see if a tick is present.

Free tick inspections would help prevent diseases such as Lyme and alpha-gal, as well as several other tick-borne diseases.

I, for one, would welcome this service.

Reeder: Court is working hard on budget

By Chris Reeder
Magistrate Adair County District #4

Mr. Byington, I appreciate your concerns. I can assure you this court is spending hours with this budget, and we are doing everything we can to keep from increasing taxes. As far as alcohol sales tax, the county receives a very small amount of revenue from the sale of alcohol. We have earmarked those dollars to pay for desperately needed sheriff's cruisers.

The City of Columbia receives most of those tax dollars because the majority of sales take place in the city limits. Budget meetings are open to the public and we welcome any input citizens have.

Talking to youth of all ages about COVID-19

By Tony Rose
Adair County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development

During the past week, it has seemed to most that the world has turned upside down. With all that has happened in just the past week related to the COVID-19 virus, it has affected us all. Adults are having a hard time grasping all that is going on. Can you imagine how it is affecting our youth? It is important that we not forget that there is a need to talk with our youth about all that is going on. I heard someone say we need to shelter our kids from all this and act as if it is not happening. That is the worst thing we could do for all our youth, they see, hear and know what is going on. We need to make sure that they have accurate information about all that is going on and be able to express their feelings about everything.

Before starting the discussion with our youth, make sure that you take the age of the youth into account. Different age youth handle things very differently so how you discuss everything must be handled differently. You know your youth best so let that lead you on how to handle the discussion. If they are wanting to talk about what is going on don't ignore it, discuss it with them. The best way is to LISTEN to them, in most cases they will take the lead.

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update - March 13, 2020

Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

The Kentucky General Assembly paused during its 10th week in light of efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a bicameral and bipartisan statement, leaders from both chambers decided to exercise an abundance of caution and postpone legislative business for Friday and Monday. This will provide an opportunity to further evaluate safety procedures and next steps. The well-being of visitors, members, and staff are of highest priority.

I would like to reassure you that Kentucky health officials and state leaders are working closely with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), federal authorities, and other health agencies to ensure collaborative and proactive measures are implemented throughout the Commonwealth. It is important that we remain calm during this time and utilize the resources provided to help all of us prevent the spread, and stay healthy. The state also issued a new hotline, 1-800-722-5725, to assist Kentuckians who have questions or need help.

How to protect against coronavirus scams

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and Attorney General Daniel Cameron issued a scam alert on Friday, warning Kentuckians of potential consumer scams related to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

To profit from consumer health concerns, online scammers may set up fake websites, send emails or texts or post on social media to sell fake products that claim to cure or prevent COVID-19.

Scammers may ask consumers to contact them or provide personal information to receive updates about COVID-19 posing as public health organizations, like the Centers for Disease Control, UNICEF or the World Health Organization.

"Kentuckians should be suspicious of scammers and con artists claiming to have a cure for the newest strain of the virus," said Gov. Beshear. "Only legitimate medical authorities are working with the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration to create a vaccine for COVID-19. If, and when, a vaccine is approved, Kentuckians should ask their family doctor or government health officials for information on how to obtain a vaccine."
