KentuckyWired Hits 1,000 Miles of installed fiber

By Randy Lutke

Frankfort, KY - KentuckyWired, a broadband project installing high-speed fiber optic cable in every county, has now completed over 1,000 miles of its planned 3,000-mile network, with 1,090 miles of fiber either on aerial poles or in underground conduit, and another 500 miles ready for fiber deployment in the coming weeks.

The head of the state agency overseeing the project says it is an important milestone. Phillip Brown, Executive Director of Kentucky Communications Network Authority said, "Obtaining the necessary pole attachment agreements to use over 70,000 utility poles owned by over 70 different entities was a slow process. Now, with all of those agreements finalized and make-ready construction increasing, the actual process of hanging fiber cable is picking up rapidly."

The project is currently on track for completion in October 2020, with portions of the network activated before that scheduled completion date. Brown said, "We expect to activate the first portion of the network in the first half of 2019, well ahead of the current schedule."

Carol Perkins: Finding the laughter

Previous Column: Feeling weary and heavy laden without Judy

By Carol Perkins

The audience was laughing so hard the cast could barely get their lines said. That is a good thing. Laughter pumps up the performers and brings out a little mischief among the casts, so sometimes one actor doesn't know what the next might to do add a little flavor. A hat might be on a head that wasn't there the night before. A piece of underwear might fly out from under a shirt (not what a person is wearing!) Not only is the audience entertained, so is the cast.

I have been in many plays, but the one showing now at Barn Lot is among the funniest. Even after hearing the lines, repeatedly, I still laugh at those delivering them.

Letter: More needs to be done

Comments re photo 82672:
Columbia we have a problem window panes falling from upper floor of historic building

By Victoria Pike

I certainly agree that the building is an eyesore to our downtown and appears to be a safety hazard as well. It would be nice if everything could be restored to its former glory but if not it needs to go. It takes away from those buildings which have been restored. It surely has an owner of record who pays the taxes on it. If not condemn it and do something with it whether that be restore or demolish.

This goes for other buildings that are not kept up in our downtown. I'm sure this won't sit well with some. Then you wonder why everything is moving out of the city and downtown to the newer developments that are all new with plenty of parking. I think it's great that some have invested their money Downtown but more needs to be done. If it can't be restored in a timely manner it needs to go to provide parking for those that have restored many of the buildings.

SB1 Advances to House

By Matt Smith

Frankfort, KY - The House Education Committee has approved SB 1, the General Assembly's landmark measure designed to address growing safety needs in Kentucky schools.

The measure is built around hardening targets to secure our schools, building an increased culture of student connection, and promoting oversight and accountability as it relates to school safety. It sets a state goal of providing more fully trained resource officers and mental health professionals in our schools, in addition to creating a statewide security marshal and requiring districts to appoint a school safety coordinator, among other items.

The measure is based on recommendations from the 2018 School Safety Working Group, which traveled the state to gather feedback from stakeholders and propose solutions to the growing epidemic of school violence. House Majority Leader Bam Carney of Campbellsville co-chaired the working group, alongside Senator Max Wise, and joined with Wise to present the measure to the committee.
