Home can your food safely - these words of advice will help

Bacteria, yeasts and molds can grow quickly on fresh fruits and vegetables. Oxygen and enzymes that can cause food to spoil are found all over and inside produce. Despite what you may find on the Internet or social media, there are only two acceptable methods for home canning of safe, quality products -- the boiling water canner method and the pressure canner method.

Day Trip comment: roads need checking for various reasons

Day trip through the region report reminds writer of trips in Vermont, and of why the bear went over the mountain.

From Sharon Whitehurst

I always enjoy the words and photos that chronicle the road trips. My Dad served as road commissioner in the small Vermont town where I grew up, and our usual outings were to go along when he drove the dirt roads evenings after work to see what needed fixing.

Jim and I enjoy puttering off to explore where a road leads -- a sort of 'bear went over the mountain' mindset!

Carol Perkins: The seven foot tall chainsaw sculpted wizard

What will the neighbors think of her friend with the seven foot chainsaw wizard in the front yard? Carol wonders, while pondering a seven foot chainsaw sculpted John Denver for herself.
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Just winging it

By Carol Perkins

When my good friend (whose name I will withhold for fear someone might question her sanity) sent me a picture of her seven -foot wooden statue of a wizard, I didn't know what to say. "Oh, what a lovely piece of yard art?" I couldn't bring myself to lie. She didn't wait for me to comment; she needed to explain, "You know what a Harry Potter fan I am." Yes, I knew. Probably the only books she's read in the last ten years have been those (a self-proclaimed none reader that she is). My only question was, "Where did you find such a piece?" I wanted to ask if it was left along the roadside.
