In the blink of an eye we'll go from the discovery of the first Daffodil blossom on February 18, 2018 to the start of the Farmers Market on the Square the early in April and there's good news for hungry kids.

Enough donations have already been raised by Lois Cunningham to pay for half of a little building so that free meals can be served to children again this year.

Hungry Kids Cafe coming to Farmers Market on the Square

2018-02-18 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Lois Cunningham.
Lois Cunningham writes: "This is a picture of the building that will house the kids meals at the market. We'll be adding shelving and turning the doors into Dutch doors. There'll be a unique carrot shaped sign by Patsy Parson which will name the building the Hungry Kids Cafe. I have enough donations to pay for half of the building which will come from Williams Furniture in Columbia, wanting to keep whatever I do as local as possible. This is not part of the market but they support this completely. Nothing will be "sold," everything that the kids get will be totally free. If an adult would like anything, from coffee to a meal, they are welcome to make donations, but there will be no charges. I have insurance and an account under Hungry Kids Cafe. Of course all donations for building and food are greatly appreciated by me and all the kids." The Farmers Market on the Square begins in April.

James Roberts: Law abiding citizens have right to defense

James Roberts writes:
We as human beings and law abiding citizens have a legal right to defend ourselves. Whether it be by self defense or whatever means possible. We have enough gun laws on the books already. With the FBI background checks already in place there should be a system to check for mental health problems, restraining orders or anything and I mean anything to keep you from buying a firearm when you should not legally be able to buy it to start with. All this information needs to be tied together when you purchase a firearm. Most of the questions on the FFL form are verified, but not all. I also believe that we are living in a time when more people should stand for defending our people from harm. If we need to put armed officers or armed teachers at every school, then so be it. Defense is the best offense. And remember that you don’t take a butter knife to a gun fight! Thanks, James Roberts.

Dave Rosenbaum: No constitutional right to drive a car

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
"Gun buyers should jump through the same hoops as drivers getting a license." There is no Constitutional right to have a drivers license. Perhaps it's time to change or repeal the Second Amendment. There is an established way to do it. It has been done 27 times and can certainly be done again but it involves a bit more than a knee-jerk law passed to assuage an outrage. -- Dave Rosenbaum

Page: Outlaw military-like guns, like the AR-15

Page writes:
The problem begins with access to guns...why is it legal to sell guns on the radio? You can be sure no background check or registration is part of the deal. A gun buyback would be a start. Outlaw military-like guns, like the AR-15. Gun buyers should jump through the same hoops as drivers getting a license. They should be certified and re-certified regularly. What a shame that people think we should teach our children and grandchildren how to hide from a gunman but it's fine if someone wants to have a weapon made to kill easily. Let them have butter knives. - Page (name and contact on file)

Commentary contains personal opinion of writer

In light of all the recent and past tragedies with school shootings, we as a community are wondering how our school system is protecting our children from this senseless violence.

I understand that schools have limited funds; however, the protection of our students should not be withheld due to a dollar amount.
