Entrepreneur Profile: Shannon Sexton, CEO, StateLine Steel

This entrepreneurial profile is about Shannon Sexton, CEO, StateLine Steel and soon-to-be partner in Adair County Kwik Lube. She took time to share experiences and philosophy developed in her journey, including these thoughts, "Life is too short to focus on could have, should have and would have. The rear-view does nothing but take up time and time is a precious commodity that we never have enough of. If someone says you can't - show them you can, and don't be afraid to stand up for yourself."

Interview with Ed Waggener

Q: When did you first realize that you wanted your own business?
A: I didn't wake up one day and decide I wanted to own a business. On the flip side, I never woke up and said that I didn't want to own one either. StateLine was a product of a great opportunity and really good timing. I lack the "fear gene" when it comes to doing something new or outside the box. I've always treated the companies I worked for like they were my own. That responsibility and work ethic opened doors that lead me directly to where I am today.

The misadventures of Mama Cat -- she needs help

By Linda Waggener

If you are in and out of downtown Columbia for the festival, please be on the lookout to see if you can help us catch, and save, our cat. She will be the one with a jar on her head -- looks to be a plastic peanut butter jar that she was licking the inside of even as we tried to grasp it and get it off her.

We're grateful for the calls and rescue efforts since posting her picture upon discovering her dilemma and being unable to catch and help her this afternoon. She is evidently able to breathe well enough even with it over her head because she had plenty of energy to race away and avoid anyone trying to help. Trying to grab a plastic jar on a scared cat in motion is like catching a greased pig.

Carol Perkins: Fostering musical ability requires patience

'I'm sure every parent of beginning Grammy winners wanted to shout at one time or another, "ENOUGH!" Perhaps that is why the Young boys ended up with a Practice House! - CAROL
Next earlier column: Carol Perkins: Difficult times can be memorable times

By Carol Perkins

Back in September, Guy's nephew and his wife spent the weekend in Kentucky (from Atlanta) and when they come, we always gather for a meal. Rather than going to a local restaurant, my sister-in-law Carolyn invited us to her house. By the time we all gathered, there were a dozen or so of us. My grandson Joseph was the only child, except Megan's (Jones) baby Piper who soon became the center of attention. Babies bring such joy, and we passed her around like a sack of sugar.

I noticed after the meal Joseph went outside and returned carrying a black case, which was obviously a musical instrument. He went to the living room where the men were gathered and in a few minutes, I heard the sound that only a trombone can make. Having joined the band just days before, he proudly showed what he had learned in only one lesson. Unlike most of us women who would have bragged on how wonderful he sounded, the men continued to talk above him. He blew louder!

His cousin James finally paid attention, having played trombone in high school, and gave it a whirl. Then another blew into the horn. Guy even tried without much luck. They discovered that making a sound come from such a horn was not as easy as it seemed.

California wildfires getting too close to family

By Linda Waggener

There were 35 fires raging in the state of California yesterday when I sent an email to my cousin Patti in the northern part of the state and asked her if she and her family were still safe. She confirmed that they are alright but that the news is scary. The Napa Valley fires are about 100 miles from their home. She said, even at that distance, "The sky is so hazy and air quality is bad." They remain in our thoughts.
