RMH truck loaded, gratitude shared for successful 2017 drive

By Ellen Zornes

The Ronald McDonald 10th Annual Wish List Drive today, October 10, 2017, was a great success. The truck is loaded with twin items for Lexington and Louisville along with a record high $780.

We had a great time, got to play in the rain, and many former Ronald McDonald House (RMH) kids (and their parents) came out to help.

Ralph Waggener: On the subject of spelling

'We all have abilities that someone else does not have; and we all have trouble with certain things which would seem simple to others. That's just part of life, I guess!' - RALPH ROY WAGGENER

By Ralph Roy Waggener

On the subject of spelling, I do admire people with the skill of good spelling! I myself was not born with this skill and I would not write or work in the word business because of the handicap.

My brother Ed got me started when he had started The Clay Statesman in Celina, TN, and there was no one to take care of it when a new hire for the paper quit.

Licenses Plates: A word on low numbered plates in Adair County

"F.X. Merkley has been issued No. 1, for 1932 numbers 2, 3, 4, [and] 5 have been issued to the following persons in order named: Bruce Montgomery, J.W. Sharp of Absher, Henry Miller, and Evan Akin." - ADAIR COUNTY NEWS, 9 November 1931.

By Mike Watson, Adair County historian

The question about low-numbered Kentucky license plates has been raised in the past. The late Russell Miller was one of the most knowledgeable in the field and taught me what little I know, or was able to retain, and was a veritable walking encyclopedia on the subject, thought there are others, now, who might rival his expertise.

Agrees with Coomer & Bell on state of language skills today

Jon Halsey writes:
Mesdames Bell and Coomer are right to bemoan the sad state of language skills in our society. The effects are indeed far reaching.

I would also propose that the lack of spelling skills is not the problem but merely a symptom of a much larger problem. That seems to be the essence of most of current news and discussions. Focus on the symptoms and ignore or obfuscate the underlying causes.

Letter: Writer agrees with Joyce Coomer on lost word skills

Sandra Bell writes:
I agree completely. I've also noticed that spelling words correctly is becoming a lost skill. I know there are companies who spell words wrong, on purpose, so they will get attention. I understand that the main goal of advertising is to get people to focus on that particular company but it seems to be getting out of hand. Business names, streets, even tv shows are spelling everything wrong. No wonder kids in school have such a hard time with spelling. --Sandra Bell
