Ralph Waggener: On the subject of spelling 'We all have abilities that someone else does not have; and we all have trouble with certain things which would seem simple to others. That's just part of life, I guess!' - RALPH ROY WAGGENER Click on headline for complete essay By Ralph Roy Waggener On the subject of spelling, I do admire people with the skill of good spelling! I myself was not born with this skill and I would not write or work in the word business because of the handicap. My brother Ed got me started when he had started The Clay Statesman in Celina, TN, and there was no one to take care of it when a new hire for the paper quit. I was sent to Celina to get the mail and was handed a Polaroid camera and told to take some photos and anything I could find to fill the newspaper. Well, there were not train wrecks and no plane wrecks and not even a house fire. I stopped at a country store to get a soft drink and some nabs and got to talking to some of the people there, took some pictures and got what Brother Ed told me to get including Who, What, When, Why, and How for the cut lines and that set me on my way to newspapering! I told everyone that I was faking it, because I knew I could not spell very well and funny thing, I'm still not good at spelling. Yes, I have improved over the years but I still have problems. I can spell a word right in one paragraph and not be able to spell it in the next! I will tell you that there is a lot of things I'm good at, and I do know news; always have been good at that part but, dab nab it, spelling is just not my thing. I do envy you people to whom spelling comes so easy. I guess you will find errors in this, but I believe you will get the gist of what I am saying. We all have abilities that someone else does not have; and we all have trouble with certain things which would seem simple to others. That's just part of life, I guess! If I offend anyone by my lack of spelling ability, then I apologies; but I will continue to do my very best, bad spelling and all!
