City Council Member Dr. Ron Rogers was elected by fellow council members to preside at the Monday, May 1, 2017, regular session of the Columbia City Council, which approved a Syringe Exchange Program as recommended by the Lake Cumberland Area Health Department, voiced unanimous and enthusiastic resolve to make Sidewalks a significant part of the 2017-18 budget, and approved actions to get the gas department overcharge refund complete. Dr. Rogers isn't new to running meetings. He is a former president of the Kentucky Chiropractic Association, a job where his knowledge of parliamentary procedures was essential. -EW

LW Athletics Awards Ceremony scheduled for Wed 03 May 2017

COLUMBIA, KY (Tue 02 May 2017) - The second-annual Lindsey Wilson College Athletics Awards Ceremony is set for Wednesday night at 7pmCT at V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY.

The ceremony shines light on department awards that have been chosen internally to honor Blue Raider student-athletes who are exceptional both on and off the field of competition. Award winners were selected by a committee consisting of members of the Lindsey Wilson Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and members of the athletic administration. Each Lindsey Wilson athletic team has a student-athlete representative on the advisory committee.

Patricia Christie Smith, 81, Taylor Co., KY/Marion Co., KY native (1935-2017)

She was a member of a leading South Central Kentucky family. She was the daughter of the late Norman Clelon Christie & Leander Shewmaker Christie and the widow of Carl Smith, her husband of over 43 years. She leaves 36 direct living descendants. She took great pride in caring for her family, as well as the many employees of the family farm. She and her late husband Carl shared a love for spending the winter months in Florida, and it was a passion she continued to embrace many years after his passing. She enjoyed God's many gifts to include her dear family, beloved friends, the beautiful warmth of sunshine and dancing as joyous music filled the air.

I just wanted to reach out and say that I was glad to see the Syringe Exchange program receive unanimous support at the City Council meeting. This is something I have advocated for since I started working in Adair County and I am glad to see steps being taken to help with the drug issue and increase community health. I hope everyone who supports it lets their magistrates know in advance of the Fiscal Court meeting. - Zac Oakes

Mike Meece, 56, Casey County, KY (1960-2017)

He was a self-employed business owner. He was the owner of The Discount Tobacco Shed in Liberty and C&M Discount Tobacco in Harrodsburg. Mike was the former owner of Save-a-lot in Liberty. He was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church. Mike also was a farmer and he enjoyed golfing and playing pool. He was a member of a prominent Casey County, KY family. He was the son of Carol Roy Meece and the late Carl Meece. He leaves four direct living descendants.

The regular session of Columbia City Council on Monday, May 1, 2017, was one of the most deliberative and decisive meetings of the Columbia City Council, as the the city got stayed focused on confronting and combatting drug problems, adopted what appears to be a fair conclusion to the gas department's overcharges, and is now ready to put a major part of the city's budget into sidewalks.

Campbellsville Middle School students recently learned how to shoot a bow and arrow.In Weston Jones's physical education class, students have been introduced to archery as a sport. Students were taught how to aim for the target, and how to calculate their points. And, after several practice sessions, students took their targets outside for a competition.

James Edward Staley, 59, formerly of Burkesville, Kentucky (1957-2017)

'James was an avid traveler, a generous but humble philanthropist, an accomplished photographer and a knowledgeable genealogist. He possessed a special gift for language and engaging conversation. His ability to communicate in native languages endeared him to both kings and paupers and earned him the respect of families worldwide.' He was a graduate of Cumberland County High School whose life time love of learning led to a degree from Western Kentucky and an international degree in teaching.

James Edward Staley, 59, of Songkhla, Thailand, formerly of Burkesville, Kentucky, peacefully died on April 26, 2017 at Bangkok-Hat Yai Hospital after a short battle with colon cancer. Funeral services and cremation were performed at Wat Laem Sai in Songkhla. Cremains were dispensed, according to his wishes, on Khao Tang Kuan ("Monkey Mountain") overlooking his beloved Songkhla Lake and the Gulf of Thailand. The family will observe a private memorial service in Burkesville, KY, at a later date.
