KY Afield Outdoors: Prime time to catch stream smallmouth bass By Lee McClellan, Associate Editor Kentucky Afield, Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Magazine Frankfort, KY - Shorter days and yellowing leaves are about the only ways you can tell it is the third week of September. Temperature wise, it feels like August lasted six plus weeks. "We are 10 degrees behind, water temperature wise, than usual for this time of year," said David Baker, Central Fisheries District biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "The water is usually cooler by now." Although the lingering summer has worn out its welcome, there is a silver lining. The peak of the topwater bite for stream smallmouth bass is just beginning, not winding down. CMS students study conflict By Calen McKinney, Public Information Officer Campbellsville Independent Schools (CIS) Campbellsville Middle School fourth-graders are studying the elements of a story, and recently did an exercise to study how conflict is used in stories. In Maranda Wright's reading classes, students are discussing setting, characters and conflicts. Wright told students there are four types of conflicts, including person vs. self, person vs. person, person vs. nature and person vs. society. To understand the different types of conflicts, students were divided into groups and then given scenarios to read. After reading the conflict, students discussed which type of conflict they believed the situation fit. 2016-09-22 12:31:00 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Education
The Whitehurst Diaries: Morning Walk By Sharon Whitehurst Mornings have crept in quietly since the rain of Saturday evening, sounds and colors subdued by the grey fog that rolls through the valley. The cats are awake early--by 5--and are less than subtle in urging me to arise and acknowledge them. The layout of the hallway and master bedroom [altered during our renovation] is ideal for cat games with its circular route down one side of the double hallway, through the bathroom, into the bedroom and back into the hall. There is always opportunity to reverse the direction of the chase, skidding on scatter rugs, charging across the bed. Gov. Bevin comments on Supreme Court ruling adverse to him Statement on Today's Supreme Court of Kentucky Ruling in University Allotment Case "We are disappointed in the Court's decision today and strongly disagree with its reasoning. The Attorney General clearly does not understand the severity of the pension problem which became the nation's worst funded plan under the watch of his father's administration. "Today's ruling only affects $18 million of the universities' overall budgets which is 0.0027 of their annual $6.6 billion expenditures. Nonetheless, we have to be vigilant about every taxpayer dollar spent if we are going to solve our pension crisis. "The Commonwealth's public universities have thousands of employees who participate in our pension system and, having such a large stake, should be part of the solution to fix the state's $35 billion underfunded pension liability. Gov. Bevin recognizes that preserving our retirement systems for state workers and retirees is both a legal and moral obligation. "We remain determined to fix Kentucky's pension crisis, no matter the opposition. This administration will continue to use every available tool to solve our pressing financial problem." 2016-09-22 12:01:19 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky
AG Beshear's statement on today's KY Supreme Court ruling By Terry Sebastian or Crystal Staley FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 22, 2016) - "Today, the Supreme Court enforced Kentucky law, reminding us that "the governor, like everyone, is bound by the law." Based on today's ruling, I am calling on Gov. Bevin to immediately release the $18 million he wrongfully withheld from our public colleges and universities. As the court stated, it is my job as Attorney General "to vindicate the public rights of the people of the Commonwealth," and I will continue to do so." "I am also calling on the governor's office to use today's ruling as a turning point. It is time for him to stop attacking, and to instead join me in building a better Kentucky. We live in a state where far too many of our children are abused. Our seniors face daily scams that seek to rob them of their hard-earned savings. Thousands of victims of sexual assault have been denied justice based on our rape kit backlog. And our communities face the most deadly drug epidemic imaginable. These are the problems Kentuckians expect us to address, and they are problems that all of us - democrats, republicans or independents - can address together. So I would hope that after today, the nasty press releases and name-calling stop, and the governor joins us for the real work that needs to be done to help Kentucky families." - Attorney General Andy Beshear. 2016-09-22 11:56:44 | Comments | Printable version

Godfrey Jackson elected CKMSAC Commissioner By Wes Feese Media Relations, Adair County Schools Adair County Asst. Athletic Director Godfrey Jackson was elected commissioner of the Central Kentucky Middle School Athletic Conference (CKMSAC) earlier this month in a vote among the conference's other athletic directors. "I'm very excited and very humbled by this opportunity," Jackson says. "For my peers to think enough of me to nominate and elect me, it really makes you want to work hard to do a good job." Jackson says he's proud to take over a conference with such a rich tradition and history, but--always looking for ways to improve--hopes to see even more success in the coming months and years. "I think it's a good conference and it's been a good conference for a long time," Jackson says. "The goal now is to keep moving it forward. We want to be a great conference, the best in the state, and with our administrators and athletic directors, I think we can do that." Jackson will be in charge of all athletic events within the eight-team conference. The first order of business is amending and getting approval on a new set of bylaws for the conference, which he says is long overdue. "That's important because we have to make sure everyone is playing by the same set of rules," he says. "Everyone will have input on what they should be but then once they're set we have to make sure everyone follows them." The conference is comprised of Adair County, Campbellsville, Casey County, Green County, Hart County Metcalfe County, Russell County, and Taylor County. 2016-09-22 10:12:43 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports

Kentucky Color - September - 'The Golden-rod is yellow . . . ' By Billy Joe Fudge Autumn is often viewed very differently today than it was in days gone by. Although in our urbanized culture where the comfort of heat and air conditioning easily removes the sting of winter's cold and the stifling discomfort of summer's heat, our forefathers did not have that luxury. This comfort causes the year to blend into a certain homogeny where the definitions separating the seasons are often lost. Old Tebbs Bend Bridge is now home Now it carries only Tebbs Bend Nature Area/Homeplace trail system foot traffic George Kolbenschlag writes: Ed. The bridge is there to stay. It is no longer judged to be safe and was moved there as part of the Tebbs Bend Nature Area/Homeplace trail system. The bridge was built in 1907 and replaced one that spanned the river at the same location beginning in 1863. The trail crosses the bridge, so it's been relegated to foot traffic. Let's hope it serves where it now sits at least another 110 years. --George KolbenschlagAbout - Taylor County's Traveling Bridge at waystop 2016-09-22 05:19:58 | Comments | Printable version
