Kentucky Color - September - 'The Golden-rod is yellow . . . ' By Billy Joe Fudge Autumn is often viewed very differently today than it was in days gone by. Although in our urbanized culture where the comfort of heat and air conditioning easily removes the sting of winter's cold and the stifling discomfort of summer's heat, our forefathers did not have that luxury. This comfort causes the year to blend into a certain homogeny where the definitions separating the seasons are often lost. Not so with our forefathers where Spring meant planting and the planting then lead to months of tilling, weeding and working from break of dawn on long Summer days to dark and beyond. Of course, Autumn was clearly marked by harvest and the beauty of nature preparing to sleep and rest through Winter's, cold and quiet. My Grandmother Emma Jessie Fudge anticipated the Autumn each late Summer and celebrated the time of year by reciting at least once, if not a dozen times, the first four lines of Helen Hunt Jackson's masterpiece, "September". THE golden-rod is yellow; My Mother, Zelma Stotts Fudge had to memorize the entire poem around 1940 at Antioch School in the Sparksville Community. Much has been gained in our modern, hopped-up, power bar, caffeine fueled culture but I can assure you that much, yes much, has been lost. This story was posted on 2016-09-22 05:40:28
