Downtown Days events on Main Stage on half hour delay

Large Crowd at Downtown Days - Friday - despite rainy weather

A very large crowd packed the Historic Courthouse Public Square in Downtown Columbia, KY, for the opening night's musical performances on the Main Stage - the Rusty Nail - in front of the Adair Annex. Despite some fairly heavy afternoon rains, after 6pmCT the weather was shirtsleeve, light jacket comfortable. Several booths were open with merchandise and information, and the food court had a wide variety of stands, most doing a brisk business. - CM

Advisory lifted for lower McAlpine pool of Ohio River

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Division of Water (DOW) and the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) are removing the recreational use advisory for the section of the Ohio River that encompasses the IRONMAN triathlon swim course and runs from Cardinal Harbour in Oldham County to the McAlpine Locks and Dam, effective immediately. Results from recent sampling by DOW indicate the levels of microcystin toxin occurring in this area of the river are below the advisory threshold for recreating in the water.

2016 kynect Open Enrollment Period begins Nov. 1

Number of insurers offering plans has doubled in two years, most in state since late '90s. Visit https://kynect.ky.gov or call 1-855-4kynect (459-6328) to learn more about affordable health care options for Kentuckians.

Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians in need of health care coverage may find more choices and lower prices by shopping on kynect during the 2016 open enrollment period, which begins Nov. 1, 2015 and runs through Jan. 31, 2016.

In fact, since kynect was established, Kentucky has grown from three insurance companies in 2014 selling policies in the individual market on the exchange, to five carriers in 2015 to seven during the upcoming 2016 enrollment period. This is the largest number of carriers in the individual market in Kentucky since the late 1990s.

LWC Football faces Cumberlands on Saturday

The top-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team hosts Cumberlands (Ky.) in the final non-divisional matchup of 2015 with kickoff slated for noon CT at Blue Raider Stadium.

Saturday's contest is the first of a tough four-game stretch for the Blue Raiders to close out the month of October. They host a receiving votes Cumberlands team, followed by a No. 10-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) squad, before heading down to face undefeated and No. 13-ranked Reinhardt (Ga.) and concluding the month on Halloween as they host Campbellsville (Ky.), who is also receiving votes in the national poll.

Kentucky Orienteering Adventure Set For Oct. 23-25

Taylorsville, KY - Two Kentucky State Parks will host the Kentucky Orienteering Adventure Oct. 23-25.

There will be three races held during the weekend, all sanctioned by Orienteering USA. The first, on Oct. 23, will be at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site in Boone County. Two races will be held Oct. 24-25 at Taylorsville Lake State Park in Taylorsville.

This inaugural event is part of the Kentucky Outdoor Adventure Games.

"In the past five years, Kentucky's state parks have become a national orienteering destination. The Kentucky Outdoor Adventure Games are evidence of this," said Glen Schorr, executive director of Orienteering USA.

Day for Prospective UK College of Agriculture Students includes tour of campus

On October 1, 2015, The Adair County High School advanced animal science class traveled to Lexington Kentucky for The University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture Prospective Student Round Up.

Students were able to tour the campus, talk to admission counselors, and explored different majors.

Students who attended were Miller Young, Landon Herron, Kasey Robinson, Katie Ploss, Jera Kessler, Jessica Simpson, Allison Burris Back, Chris Franklin, Easton Turner, Michael Mackenzie, and Katelyn Woodrum.

Adair County Grand Jury returns indictments Tue 6 Oct 2015

Indictments brought against five individuals, four from Columbia, KY, one from Russell Springs, KY. Charges include wanton endangerment, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police, manufacturing methamphetamine and other drug related offenses, flagrant non-support, theft by unlawful taking, tampering with physical evidence, burglary, possession of firearm by convicted felon,
NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding.

The Adair County, KY Circuit Court grand jury, Columbia, KY, returned indictments against the following individuals on Tuesday, 615 October, 2015:

Billy Caldwell, Knifley area mail carrier, receives 25 year pin

William R. (Billy) Caldwell was recognized today, Friday, October 10, 2015 for 25 years of service as a Rural Mail Carrier at the Columbia Post Office, with a presentation of a 25 year Service Award Pin and Letter of Commendation from the United States Postal Service's Kentuckiana Manager Elizabeth Schaeffer.

Billy serves more than 430 deliveries on a 110 mile route in the Northeast section of Adair County, including most of Knifley and Casey Creek. Billy's son, Bradley Caldwell, who was at the presentation, is also serving as a Rural Carrier Associate.

Lawrence Martin Burton, Jr., Adair Co. native (1929-2015)

He was a proud veteran of the United States Army who served during the Korean War as a paratrooper. Lawrence was a mechanic by trade and loved fishing. He was born in Vester, Adair County, KY, a member of a large, highly respected Northeastern Adair County, KY family. He was the son of the late Lawrence Sr. & Emma Irene Streeval Burton. He leaves 22 direct living descendants.

Lawrence Martin Burton, Jr., 85, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at his residence in Hardinsburg, Indiana.

Burial will take a place at 12pmCT/1pmET on Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 415 North Gate Road, Madison, IN 47250. Full military honors will be conducted.
