LWC Football faces Cumberlands on Saturday

By Charlie Balcom

The top-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team hosts Cumberlands (Ky.) in the final non-divisional matchup of 2015 with kickoff slated for noon CT at Blue Raider Stadium.

Saturday's contest is the first of a tough four-game stretch for the Blue Raiders to close out the month of October. They host a receiving votes Cumberlands team, followed by a No. 10-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) squad, before heading down to face undefeated and No. 13-ranked Reinhardt (Ga.) and concluding the month on Halloween as they host Campbellsville (Ky.), who is also receiving votes in the national poll.

The Blue Raiders (4-0) won their fourth-straight game to start the season 42-17 over Union College (Ky.) at Williamson Stadium last Saturday. Lindsey Wilson's offense outgained Union 468-to-322 in total yards. The Blue Raiders rushed for 298 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Josh Haney rushed for 97 yards and his fourth and fifth touchdowns of the season. Jayven Jones and quarterback Zak Mizell also scored rushing touchdowns.

Through the air, starting quarterback Dylan Beasley passed for 150 yards and a touchdown to Jay Gaudlock, who led the Blue Raiders with four catches. Beasley has 836 yards passing and seven touchdowns this season.

Defensive lineman Chris Oldham recorded his team leading third sack and forced two fumbles, while Kamil Malone tallied one sack.

On special teams, Allen Cooks returned his third punt return touchdown of the season. Cumberlands (4-1) relies heavily on their efficient running attack and outstanding play on special teams, both of which rank in the top four in the NAIA in multiple statistical categories.

The Patriots have won three-consecutive games entering Saturday, including a 59-7 home win over Bethel (Tenn.) on Sept. 3. Cumberlands rushed the ball 68 times for 432 yards, including 100-yard rushing performances by running backs Hunter Lewis and Kevin Claussen. Lewis found the end zone twice while Claussen, quarterback Adam Craig, and two other players each rushed for a touchdown in the win.

Craig, who also threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Wendall Williams, has 20-total touchdowns on the season, 11 on the ground and nine through the air.

Williams, who was named the NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week after returning his third kick return touchdown of the season against Bethel, has eight total touchdowns and averages 205.4 all-purpose yards per game for the Patriots. He has already been named the Mid-South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week four times in 2015.

Corey Washington leads the Patriots defense with 54 total tackles, which is good for an NAIA 11th best 10.8 tackles per game. Matt Jewell leads Cumberlands with three sacks to go along with 31 tackles.

The Blue Raiders are 1-2 all time against the Patriots with the home team winning every matchup in the series. Last season, Lindsey Wilson came out on top with a 31-28 victory at Blue Raider Stadium.
