There were some tense moments, but tonight, by a 3-2 vote, Superintendent Alan W. Reed was given a four year contract to head the Adair County School Board. The board conference room was packed, and when the vote was taken, the crowd burst into applause and gave Mr. Reed a standing ovation. Quinn Lasley, the swing vote who had announced her intention this week to vote for renewing Mr. Reed's contract suggested, that instead of a four year contract, the extension should be for two. Superintendent Reed responded that if he were not given a four year term, then he was out.

Sadie Hawkins success story: Gary & Doris McKinney Lane

Gary Lane writes:
My wife (Doris Jean McKinney) caught me at a Sadie Hawkins Day at Lindsey Wilson College in 1959. I went up a tree thinking she wouldn't climb it, but she did. We were married before Marring Sam on the steps of the Administration building. Some time after that, we started dating and the rest is history. We have been married 52 years and still visit Lindsey Wilson on a regular basis. Lot of memories there. - Gary Lane

KY Afield Outdoors: Take a youth hunting

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - She sits on a plastic bucket in a field with her toy wooden gun, admiring the caterpillars and butterflies, while her father waits alongside and hopes for doves to fly into shotgun range.

They are creating a memory and nurturing a seed planted a couple of years ago. She was 3 then and her dad had taken a deer during the modern gun season. Seeing the harvested animal up close intrigued her.

Letter: A worthwhile page in our right to speak

George Kolbenschlag writes:
Editor Waggener's comments are a great summary of the school board uproar of the era. He is right on with what he says. All parties on the board appear sincere in their opinions, and no matter the outcome this has been a worthwhile page in our right to speak our piece on matters of public concern. That's what makes this a great place to live. And we should thank God we don't all agree. And Columbia Magazine is a great vehicle to do that.

My piece is I hope Alan Reed is retained. He's proven to be by far the most professional, creative and student-oriented superintendent in the 28 years my wife and I have lived in Adair County. It would be a shame to end his tenure and in my opinion, it would would be detrimental to our school system. --George Kolbenschlag

A State Championship Board (team) and keeping the Coach

Opinion by Ed Waggener

Of all the Boards of Education in Adair County history, this one, on balance has been a favorite. Up until the Superintendent evaluation meeting, they were on track for a State Championship year, if there were such a thing among boards. All five members are All-Kentucky, in my book. And they have, in Alan Reed, a championship coach.

Now, with the stated intentions of Ms. Quinn Lasley to vote to retain him they seem certain to keep a proven, winning "coach" in the Superintendent

There are basketball analogies, which reminded me of "Hoosiers" as well as "When Hack quit the team," a chapter in Adair County Public School. History. Article continues...

Carol Perkins: Lessons from Sadie Hawkins Day

A valuable lesson and a defining moment on Sadie Hawkins Day, when the object of Carol's affections "ran like a deer."
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: My grandmother and her sister Annie

By Carol Perkins

When I was a freshman in high school, one of the clubs sponsored a Sadie Hawkins Day event that concluded with a dance in the school gym. Sadie Hawkins Day is rooted in the story of Sadie Hawkins, a character created by Al Capp in the comic strip Li'l Abner. Sadie, described as "the homeliest gal in the hills," was unable get a date; so her father, a prominent citizen in the town of Dogpatch, named a day after her to help Sadie get a man. On Sadie Hawkins Day, a footrace was held in Dogpatch so the women could pursue the town's eligible bachelors.

At school the rules were laid out that on the afternoon before the dance, the student body would be released to the football field at which time girls would chase boys and those that were "tapped" became the date for the dance. Feeling in charge and knowing the exact young man I wanted for my date, I set out to get him. The surprise came when I had run my little legs off after him while he kept running. I thought he was playing hard-to-get; he was playing run for your life.

Early yesterday I filled up my tank for $2.09/gallon.
Last night I went back to fill up another farm vehicle and the price was $2.45.

This afternoon the price was $2.25.

What the heck is going on that the price of gas would change that much?
