Trish Hadley Zatkoff responds to Mr.Halsey's comments Comments about: Trish Zatkoff: Parent finds Supt. Reed, staff are problem solvers By Trish (Hadley) Zatkoff I have to respond to Mr Halsey's comment about the lack of a Calculus class at ACHS. When John Shelley accepted another position with the school, that left an opening for a Calculus teacher. I understand that the school has been trying very hard to fill that position, but there are special requirements to be able to teach the class. My son is taking an online calculus class at the school, with any help he needs coming from other math teachers. Mr. Shelley also offered his expertise any time my son needs it. I am very satisfied that Mr. Reed, Mrs. Curry, and Mr. Shelley went out of their way to make sure students have what they need. - Trish (Hadley) Zatkoff 2015-09-21 09:44:13 | Comments | Printable version
For Miss Vicky, it's war on the passion flower For farmers, passion flower is more than annoyance - and it scares gentile and gentrified farmers when it makes a loud popping noise when run over by a tractor. Miss Vicky is passionate about the passion flower, advocating it's extinction in agricultural areas, especially the fertile lands in Greater Bliss, where she makes a living managing Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch. Click on headline for complete story By Victoria Pike It is the pod that grows on the vining purple passion flower that is flourishing in many fields around here. When you run over it with the tractor it makes a loud popping noise and spread large seeds for more next year. This has become widespread in our neighborhood despite all my best efforts. I have sprayed to kill it but with some success. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2015-09-21 08:21:11 | Comments | Printable version

Marsha Walker: On subject of physical books being furnished Believes State Legislature stopped funding books several years ago, and notes, ' . . . they are unbelievably expensive. E-readers are much more economical. About: Comments re article 77811 Gerald Doss Bought own books in the 1950s Marsha Walker Personal commentary I believe the KY Legislature stopped funding school books several years ago. I, too, bought my own books in high school. Back then, we took care of our books and resold them. Lots of books are lost or damaged each year, and they are unbelievably expensive. E-readers are much more economical. Today, school districts are expected to provide so many things that were once provided by families (books, clothing, shoes, school supplies, meals, food for the weekends, meals during the summer, medical personnel, maintaining of medical records, transportation, counseling, summer and after school education and the list goes on. Teachers spend their own money for classroom supplies and snacks for children who have none. I am going to research "What percentage of the KY state budget did public schools receive from 1990 through the present." I think I will be shocked. - Marsha Walker 2015-09-21 03:09:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Education

Jon Halsey: Taken aback calculus not being offered at ACHS Comments re article 77823 Trish Zatkoff Parent finds Supt Reed staff are problem solvers By Jon Halsey Personal commentary Admittedly it has been well over 50 years since I left High School and almost 30 since my youngest graduated, however, I was taken aback to learn that the local High School does not offer calculus. The typical college prep lane when I was in high school was two years of Algebra, one year of Geometry, one year of Trig and one year of Calculus. We were also required to take one year of Biology, one year of Chemistry and one year of Physics.
