Bryan Blair: 1905 would have been early era of carnivals

Bryan Blair writes:
I'm not sure what the first year of a carnival at the Adair County Fair was but 1905 would've been the early era of carnivals in the USA. It is widely believed that carnivals got their beginnings after the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. In 1902 there were seventeen traveling carnivals in the United States. The number grew to forty-six in 1905 and by 1937 there was an estimated 300 carnivals touring the country. - Bryan Blair

Little Peanut, Angus newborn; rescued from black vulture attack

Those black ugly birds of prey are a protected species. Miss Vicky learned that first hand, when newborn Angus calf Little Peanut was attacked by some 15 birds. Thanks to an alert by Ernie Rogers, she was able to rescue the little fellow. In the safe harbor of the barn he grew strong, and made a new friend there, a little iPhone 6 shy kitten named Popcorn. There's a point to this story she says: keep a watch on your cattle during calving season. If you see vultures circling, please let your neighbors who have cattle know or go check yourself. Just as scary: The birds have been know to stalk human babies. Attacks on humans are not common, but do occur.

Bud was named after our boogy man sinkhole dweller, Bud Mullins, on the advice of Miss Nancy Moran Fouser, whose grandmother dreamed Bud up many moons ago to control the wild neighborhood children. I was one of those wild ones. Bud is from the prized registered herd of Kenneth Lowe, Oak Hollow Angus Farms, Smiths Grove Kentucky.

A question for Jim on moral rectitude, presence of carnivals

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Jim, you're one of the best. Love the research you do and thanks for passing it on to those of us unskilled and unlearned in such matters.

I do have an observation and was just wondering if you might be able to shed light on the subject. I noticed there was no mention of a carnival or the such. So were carnivals the icing on the fair experience cake that did not come along until more modern times and do you think the lack of a carnival might just have been a catalyst to calmer times for law enforcement during the fair? - Billy Joe Fudge

JIM: The news from August 30, 1905 - 110 years ago

Fivescore and five ago: the Fair; things for sale; moral rectitude; education; bridge improvements; a whiff of politics; other oddments; and two terrible tragedies.

Fivescore and five years ago today -- August 30, 1905 -- dozens of short items dotted the front page of the Adair County News, many of them dealing with the Fair, which had closed out on Saturday.

Among the Fair-related bits, readers were informed that "Mrs. Tim Bradshaw's Jersey cow went after two premiums and got them both;" Clide Crenshaw's pig took two blues, Jo Coffey, Jr. won top honors in the gentleman's riding ring; "The show of mules was as good as any county in the State ever had;" and the lemonade stand was a huge hit -- and never ran dry.

Billy Joe Fudge: Encore editorial on Leadership from 5 years ago

By Billy Joe Fudge
Guest editorial

"Below is a letter which I submitted to CM over 5 years ago. NOTHING HAS CHANGED and NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE UNTIL the Mayor stands before his city council and the County Judge Executive stands before his fiscal court and addresses the issue. NOTHING GETS DONE WITHOUT VISIONARY LEADERSHIP - President Kennedy saying, " ...I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth" and President Reagan making the declaration, "Tear down this wall" were acts of courageous leadership which precipitated defining moments in the course of our nation and the world. DEFINING MOMENTS DON'T JUST HAPPEN. Defining moments are not karma. Defining moments are created. Sometimes they are created in the face of great resistance and at what appears to be, great risk. However, strong, intuitive, visionary leaders are able to discern when doing nothing is a more detrimental and damaging action than doing something. It is time for our community to experience a defining moment. It is time for our community's leadership to lead. - BILLY JOE FUDGE. Editorial remembered this morning on seeing a reminder, above left, (Is it or is it not safe to cross? Is it in fact a crosswalk?) that progress has been too little in the past five years.

My Two Cents Worth

"Hey Ed, I know everyone is tired of my two cents worth, but here comes another penny's worth to ponder.

Am I on the list of those you need permission from to write about what you want to write about?

Thanks - The comment is so appreciated. But yes, we do need "permission" of a sort to write what we want to write about - and your tacit permission is much appreciated. Also appreciate your very occasional private notes when we cross a line. - EW

From The Hawks to The Band

I grew up liking country music despite the efforts of my mother and Miss Eleanora who taught music splendidly to dozens of local kids -- all but me.

After four frustrating years of twice weekly music lessons, Miss Eleanora told mother that her money would be better spent on anything other than music lessons for me.

Favorite old photo posted two years ago:
Thumbing through some old photos in our archives, it was hard to believe that this one, over 20,000 CM photos ago, was posted just two years ago, with this caption: "The nationally famous Greensburg Foot Bridge over Goose Creek on the East Side of the Public Square, was an observation deck when this rare photo was taken. It was before Green River Dam was built in Taylor County, and Green River backed up to this level. The beautiful old white house still stands, it's owned by Wanda Long. Since the Green River Dam, Greensburg has been spared flooding of this magnitude; the river is much more predictable, much better behaved. Larry Smith. Columbian surprised to learn Salato Center named for her doctor

It was only about 10 years ago, on a company sponsored trip to the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, that Adair County native Von Price saw Dr. Salato's photo and she realized it was named for her childhood family doctor - the Columbia physician who delivered her own son.
About Comments re photo 61845 Groundhog at Salato Wildlife Education Center

By Von Price

I have to tell you a little something about the Salato Wildlife Center, for those who have never been there.

This is a beautiful Wildlife Center which was named after Dr. James Salato. He was such an avid fisherman and loved wildlife so much that they named this place after him. I only learned this myself about 10 years ago.
