Advice from Jean Cravens about monster smashing

2015-08-23 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Jean Cravens holds three handy monster smashers (powerful little flashlights) that she brought on her last visit for her great niece Hailey who occasionally sees monsters in the dark. Jean advises, "When you think there's a monster lurking under the bed or in a closet, you just shine this spotlight on him and he'll instantly disappear!" She learned about this method of smashing monsters during her experiences raising Don, Sue, Phil and Beth Ann Cravens and says spotlighting them works every time. - LW

Comments re article 77240 Where in the World Hidden cave site puzzle has stumped all

Richard Phelps writes:
Is it the cave on 55 South (Holliday Cave) where the boys were lost several hours years ago ?- Richard Phelps
Good guess: But it's not. Actually, only the puzzlemaster on this one, Mr. Kenny Absher will be able to say where it is. We only know a billion or so places where it is not. It is not in Taylor County, for one. - CM

Where in the World? Hidden cave site puzzle has stumped all

Click on headline for story for original Kenny Absher photo and two more photo clues

ColumbiaMagazine.com story

That Kenny Absher! He's presented a down right wicked Where in the World Is it? Puzzle.

He sent a (PHOTO) of Christopher Dean Forton at a seldom seen cave site, asking, "Do you know where it is, and what happened there in 1938?"

So far, we've had two excellent answers, but neither one the correct answer:
- Joyce Sneed wrote: "I thank it is on road number 551 on Kenny Brock's property beside his house and I think soldiers hid in the cave and stored their food during war in 1938. - Joyce Sneed

And another reader had the same notion:

- Odis Sinclair wrote: Is the cave on Bull Run Road? - Odis Sinclair
But no, the Cave is not one Bull Run Creek. Vut we will tell you it is somewhere downstream, that if you put Wacky Qwacky Duck in the waters of Bull Run, it might flow past the site.

Jury convicts New Jersey Man of illegally trafficking in paddlefish

The American paddlefish (Polydon spathula), also called the Mississippi paddlefish or the "spoonbill," is a freshwater fish that is primarily found in the Mississippi River drainage system. Paddlefish eggs are marketed as caviar. The retail value of the caviar is estimated to be between $30,000 and $50,000. Paddlefish were once common in waters throughout the Midwest. However, the global decline in other caviar sources, such as sturgeon, has led to an increased demand for paddlefish caviar. This increased demand has led to over-fishing of paddlefish and consequent decline of the paddlefish population.

Tom Chaney: Yes, I Can. And, Yes, I Did

Of Writers And Their Books: Yes, I Can. And, Yes, I Did! Tom says, I reckon it was scarier of a night before the electric came and lit up the dark corners of the room, a review of Tales of Kentucky Ghosts by William Lynwood Montell . This column first appeared 5 September 2010.

By Tom Chaney

Yes, I Can. And, Yes, I Did!

William Lynwood Montell, folklorist par excellence, has done it again.

He who brung us tales of Coe Ridge; who has chased Ghosts Across Kentucky; has tracked down Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky; and has run to ground Tales from Kentucky Funeral Homes, has plowed the ground again with his Tales of Kentucky Ghosts [University Press of Kentucky, 2010].
