BJF: Why a fresh new start to re-invigorate Downtown is needed

Billy Joe Fudge examines past approaches which have not yet yielded results or the momentum needed to make Downtown Columbia become what it should be
Click on headline for complete commentary

a By Billy Joe Fudge

Concerning the refurbishing and reinvigorating of our beloved Downtown, there are two schools of thought and there is merit to each.

Many (The First School) contend that the building owners and business owners must make the investment to repurpose their buildings in order to set the stage for attracting folks Downtown to live and to shop. They are against any kind of public investment in lieu of this private investment. The folks in this camp are frustrated that "we the people" have and are presently shelling out millions in tax dollars that in many cases seems to be needlessly and haphazardly thrown in the deep-blue sea never to be seen again. I too am frustrated with the apparent lack of accountability in government these days.

Ralph Roy Waggener: Let's not repeat proven failures

He thinks it's people who make the difference. Suggests CJE Mike Stephens, Tommy Grider, and Mike Neal as ideal for just being "get the job done" types who could achieve economic development at the least cost. Suggests County is already employing Holly Grimsley - let her continue, from the CJE office, what she was doing as "ambassador."

Personal commentary

When you try something and it fails you make modifications and try again, if this fails then at least you tried! If you try a third time and you fail, then you have to know you are doing it wrong.

The Chamber of Commerce, and yes, the Economic Development Authority have been complete failures as far as locating industry here in Columbia/Adair County. Yes, we have spent over a half million dollars.

Yes, we have hired people to head up the recruiting of industry, and yes, we have failed in all attempts.

Geo. Kolbenschlag: Planning for Downtown needs diverse ideas

'There needs to be some new, creative approaches and some new ideas,' he says. He suggests membership not be limited to familiar names. Leader needs to be good moderator, concensus builder - someone not afraid to share load . . . and a group which would draw heavily from some of the talent at Lindsey Wilson.
Comments re article 76648 Billy Joe Fudge A plan for Downtown Columbia KY

By George Kolbenschlag

I know Billy Joe Fudge is aware his appeal for the community to come together with some new and creative ideas to revitalize downtown Columbia is not a new idea.

But he is right about the need to stop talking about it and start acting.

Commentary on A Plan for Downtown Columbia

Linda Waggener writes:
Billy Joe Fudge makes great points! A question -- why does there need to be a new organization; why not use one of the existing ones like The Adair Heritage Association, EDA, Chamber of Commerce, etc.? At any rate, I like the thinking of coming together. As one recently put it to me, "our public square just doesn't look like who we are with the empty courthouse and major buildings, something must be done." - Linda Waggener
