Epicurean Kentuckian: Oh, do you know The Muffin Man?

2015-04-16 - 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by CM Staff.
Muffins are a specialty of the bakery at Harvest Cafe on the Square in Columbia. Each day the baker, Steve Chundy, rotates delivery routes in Columbia with muffins, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. Many of the customers remember him as "The Muffin Man," not the one one Drury Lane, but the song does get in one's head at the sight of the muffins, or the sight of Steve on his rounds. They are good. The Cafe's baked goods change daily, but every day there is a good selection of muffins. - EK

Ammunition developer launching operation in Central KY

Engineers decide to form their own company in Elizabethtown, KY, after employer decides to move out of state; Commonwealth and locals pitch in to help

By Joe Hall

"We have established great ties in Kentucky," Jarboe said. "Our families are happy here, and we couldn't imagine being anywhere else."

Jarboe and Jiranek had the best of both worlds. They both worked as staff engineers for a global company involved in designing, developing and marketing state-of-the-art rifles, cartridges and ammunition. But when that company made the business decision to consolidate operations to another state, the men were at a crossroads. They had the option of moving with the company, but their desire to remain in Kentucky was stronger than the job offer.

"We knew we were going to be out of a job if we stayed in Elizabethtown, but Kentucky is our home, first and foremost," said Jiranek. "We decided to explore our options."

KY Afield Outdoors: Spring turkey season opens Sat 18 Apr 2015

By: Kevin Kelly

FRANKFORT, KY - The wait is almost over for turkey hunters in Kentucky. A calendar shift pushed the state's 23-day general spring wild turkey season back this year to the third weekend in April. It opens Saturday, April 18 and runs through May 10.

Last spring, hunters in Kentucky reported taking 29,943 turkeys.

"The current five-year average of 32,759 birds harvested in the spring is the highest five-year average that we've recorded to date," said Steven Dobey, wild turkey program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "While we see some year-to-year fluctuation, looking at it at an increment of five years, our harvest success is the highest it's ever been, which is something hunters should be excited about."

Spring turkey hunters may harvest a male turkey or a turkey with a visible beard, but not more than one in a day, and no more than two birds total during the season. They now have the option of using a .410 shotgun in their pursuits.

Mayfield, Ratliff and Riggs sign to fish at CU

By: Jordan Alves, Campbellsville University Sports Information

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville bass fishing has hit the water with a full head of steam this spring but recruiting never stops and coach Tommy Hall is already looking into the future. The first-year head coach has added depth to its roster for 2015-16 with three new signees this week.

Signing days for Ben Riggs, Nick Ratliff and Justin Mayfield were held in the Powell Athletic Center on the campus of Campbellsville University on Monday and Wednesday.

Riggs, from LaRue County High School and Ratliff, an Elizabethtown High School product, signed their letter of intents on Monday. Even though they come from two different schools, the duo comes in as a team.

"It is very rare for two student-athletes to come in as a team," said Hall. "They have traveled together all of the country and are already comfortable working together. They not only fish together but they also duck hunt together and are more like best friends. That is something I will not break up.... It is hard to put an upperclassman together with a freshman because once the upperclassman graduates, the freshman has to find a new teammate. I want Nick and Ben to fish together all four years they are at Campbellsville.

Letter: Historical perspective on quail program

By Jim

Yesterday's PR release concerning Kentucky's quail restoration program (Public meetings scheduled to discuss quail restoration plan) brought to mind two passages from the Adair County News.

The first, an opinion piece, appeared toward the end of 1905. just days before the opening of quail season. Although unattributed, it possibly was written by C.S. Harris, himself a farmer as well as newspaper owner/publisher.
