COF: Newer, faster, more golly gee, ain't always better

COF writes:
Not to make light of a serious situation but seems ta me consequences were a tad less dire when we travelled via "Ole Dobbin" or for the racier set "Big Red." Course Shanks Mare was even less fraught with peril.

KY Ag Dept seeks applications for specialty crop projects

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Farmers and other eligible applicants in Kentucky may seek funding from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for producing and marketing "specialty crops," Agriculture Commissioner James Comer has announced.

Specialty crops are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops.

"These crops are a growing part of Kentucky's agriculture industry," Commissioner Comer said. "Kentucky has the soils and the climate to be a major producer of specialty crops. We're looking for projects that will make Kentucky specialty crops more competitive in the United States and around the world."

Traffic Advisory: Changes today on KY 224 and I-65, Hardin Co.

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer, KTC District 4 - Elizabethtown

Motorists traveling across Interstate 65 via KY 224 may experience short delays for the next few months as bridge construction continues. A signal will be activated this afternoon to allow alternating one-way traffic over the interstate. Demolition work on the existing KY 224 bridge will allow for completion of a new bridge in order to accommodate widening I65 to six lanes. The signal is expected to remain active until early June.

Beginning at midnight, demolition will require closure of northbound I65 lanes beneath the existing structure. Traffic will be routed off of I65 at Exit 76 (Upton), across KY 224 and back onto the interstate via the northbound on ramp. Northbound delays are possible. Lanes beneath the bridge will reopen by 7am Central/8am Eastern Wednesday morning.

Wednesday night, the remainder of the existing structure will be demolished, requiring closure of southbound I65 lanes. Just as with Tuesday night's traffic plan, southbound motorists will be routed off of the interstate at Exit 76 (Upton), across KY 224 and back onto the interstate via the southbound on ramp. Southbound delays are possible. Lanes beneath the bridge will reopen by 7am Central/8am Eastern Thursday morning.

Coach Mark Fudge shares letter to Adair School admistrators

March 30, 2015

Mr. Alan Reed, Superintendent
Mr. Troy Young, Principal
Mr. Brent Campbell, Athletic Director

First and foremost I would like to thank each of you for your support. After coaching in the Adair County School District for the past 30 years and spending the last 12 years as head basketball coach of the ACHSboy's basketball program, I feel that it is time for me to retire from coaching. It has truly been both an honor and a blessing to have been involved in Adair County athletics for so many wonderful years.

Adair County athletics have been a cornerstone of my life from the time that I was in 6th grade playing basketball and running cross country until now. I learned many valuable life lessons while competing in basketball, baseball, track, and cross country while attending ACHS.

The 30 years that I've spent coaching basketball on various levels as well as the 13 seasons I spent coaching girl's softball and the three years I coached middle school football were perhaps the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have been extremely blessed to have worked alongside so many loyal and wonderful people while at the same time have the opportunity to impact the lives of so many precious youth.

I look forward to continuing to serve as PE teacher and FCA sponsor at Adair County High School. I always have been and will continue to be an avid supporter of Adair County Athletics.

Sincerely,
- Mark Fudge

The solution to the dangerous intersection

Very soon, maybe later today or in the morning, we have an important story to present on the changes needed to make the intersection safer, with a elegant solution, already posted, by the way, which costs the least, is almost certain to solve the biggest problem, eliminate the all fatalities, will be reversible if it doesn't work, and will have a cost in the range of $20,000 for the entire bypass - and which would might need an executive order from the Governor to implement, or at least a high level decision at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 8, in Somerset, KY.

Gov. Beshear responds to auditor's report on Rural Hospitals

Gov. Beshear emphasizes that the Auditor's Report is base on 2013 data, and does not reflect the sea changes in healthcare since Medicaid expansion began in 2014. The payments hospitals got in 2014, overall, from Medicaid, is up, big time.
Gov. Beshear's response relates to Special Report on the financial strength of Kentucky's Rural Hospitals PDF by Adam H. Edelen, Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts

By Governor Steve Beshear

FRANKFORT, KY - "Since Kentucky is seen as a national leader in the success of our health care reforms, the administration is well aware of how health care delivery changes are impacting rural hospitals, and we have partnered with those hospitals for the past several years to help them navigate the new health care economy. We're pleased that the Auditor's report supports our continuing work

Supt. Reed: Thrilled to read Gov. Beshear's aerospace message

It's all about the kids and future economic development: These are exciting times to be an ACHS student!, Supt. Reed says. In 2016-2017, Adair County High School will join the High School Aerospace/Aviation four year career pathway leading to an industry certification in one of four areas of aerospace., the 27th program in Kentucky, and the FIRST in the NATION with the new National Aviation/Aerospace program, headquartered in Kentucky. There will be no tripping over county lines in this one: Adair will has graciously been invited by existing programs at Metcalfe County and Taylor County to join in competitive efforts. There's a hint in this article of a major new development with KCTCS in IT and 3-D printing.
Response to: Gov. Beshear signs resolution to launch Kentucky Aviation/Aerospace

By Alan W. Reed, Superintendent, Adair County School District

I was thrilled to read Governor Beshear's resolution, and once again Adair County High School is leading the way for other high schools by preparing students careers in the Aerospace industry - manufacturing, design, airframe and power plant repair, and professional flight school.

Kentucky is now second in the nation, behind Washington state, in aviation manufacturing. Aviation manufacturing, alone, is now a 7 billion dollar a year industry. We don't assemble the big Airbuses or Boeing's, but we make the engines and brake assemblies. Aerospace manufacturing far surpasses the automotive industry. I call it the "quiet industry", and it continues to boom.

History: Anyone remember Mr. Ruel Wooten's sign?

In the 1950s, I believe, one of the most wonderful Adair Countians of all times, Mr. Ruel Wooten, put a sign in the window of Loy's Department Store, then located in what is now 214 Public Square, between what was then the Adair County News building, and, I believe, Owen's Men's Wear (not Harvest Cafe). I remember it as saying, and this is paraphrased:
Wouldn't we get a lot more done, if we didn't worry about who gets the credit?
Does anyone have a photo of that sign, or remember the exact wording or has memories of Mr. Wooten and his wonderful wife, Runie Wooten, please contact us. Somehow, it seems we need to be reminded of that frequently, especially now. - ED WAGGENER, Phone 270-250-2730.
