Afternoon Storm Update, March 5: Crews continue fighting the latest round of winter weather. Roads conditions remain slick and hazardous. KY KYTC District 8 Counties are Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Lincoln, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell and Wayne counties.

By Amber Hale, Public Affairs Officer

SOMERSET, KY (5 Mar 2015) – As of 4pmET, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 highway crews continue plowing and treating roadways with salt and calcium chloride. The winter storm that moved into our area Wednesday dropped more than 10 inches of snow in some parts of the district and up to 1/4 inch of ice blanketed the roads prior to the snow accumulation, creating more of a challenge for road crews. As a result, roads across the district became slick and hazardous and at this hour still remain snow covered.

Adair Co. Deputy CJE: Statement, school bus stops, turnarounds

(Note: This statement has been passed by School Superintendent Alan Reed and Adair County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin. - HOLLY GRMSLEY)

From Holly Grimsley, Deputy Judge Executive writes:

The Judge Executive's office has received (and understandably so) many calls questioning why school bus turn-arounds and/or bus stops are not being cleared or cleaned. The short answer is the road department crews are not allowed, by state law, to cross or work on any property that is not county owned and are not allowed to take any equipment that is paid with taxpayer dollars onto any private property.

We understand the frustration and as much as we also would like to ensure that those areas are taken care of as well, these stops are usually privately owned and legally we cannot. There is a process in place that may allow the county a legal right-of-way and if you are interested you should contact the school system and your local magistrate. Chris Bennett: Life in Long Hunters, Adair County, USA

March 5, 2015

By Chris Bennett

Ed, I wanted to tell you about this new snow shovel I bought at Jeffries Hardware yesterday. It is the best dang snow shovel that I have ever had the displeasure of using; although shoveling snow is never really fun, this Super shovel makes it easy. This snow is different from the other, its kinda heavy on the bottom and more powdery on top. On Butler street the snow has drifted much more than our last snow, I measured it in several places. It measured as much as 10" and as little as 3" so I guess we got 4 or 5 inches of snow here? It's hard to judge.

In Hardin County, northbound is moving slowly. Southbound is stopped in some locations between Shepherdsville and Exit 103, Joe Prather Highway.

WK/BG Parkways - Covered but traffic is moving slowly, except for BG between Elizabethtown and Boston where blockages have just cleared and traffic is just beginning to crawl.

US/KY Routes - 31W is being used as an I65 detour but is now blocked near Upton due to a semi collision. Other run-offs and minor crashes are reported district wide. Muldraugh passable along 31W. Road Conditions - KYTC District 4 - 9:30pmCT, Wed 4 Mar 2015

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY - All crews are out in District 4 counties Roads are mostly snow-covered with the exception of our most southern and eastern territories, which are still experiencing heavy sleet. Snow and Ice Teams are focusing on priority routes due to snow intensity. Much like two weeks ago, it is difficult to keep up with accumulation rates.

  • I65 / Parkways: Traffic is barely moving across the entire District on these routes. Many of our trucks are becoming stuck in traffic with other motorists. There are numerous run-offs and crashes reported.
  • US / KY Routes: These roads are covered or quickly becoming covered. Widespread reports of run-offs and minor crashes have been received.
All roads are very slick.
