Travel Conditions - 1pm Quick Update, KYTC District 4

Motorists should be aware of re-freezing potential and reduce their speeds. Icing conditions like these often present a hazard where drivers are going too fast to avoid losing control. - CHRIS JESSIE
Readers note: District 4 covers Green and Taylor Counties within the CM 7-County area. Road conditions in District 4 are important to all in this region who might be travelling north, particularly on District 4's stretch of I-65, the longest of any KYTC District

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer
KY Transportation Cabinet, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY.

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (1pmCT/2pmET, Sun 22 Feb 2015) - Primary routes are in good shape.

Sun is helping melt covered patches on secondary roads. Shaded areas may still have trouble spots.

Our crews will be going home overnight. State routes have been treated today and those with covered spots are plowed down as much as possible.

Primary concerns tonight deal mostly with freezing water running across pavement from today's snow melt.

Lows are forecast in and close to single digits overnight which will make normal treating ineffective until temps rise and sunlight returns Monday morning. Some light snow showers are in the forecast but we do not anticipate plowable accumulations anywhere in the district.

Crews will return on Monday morning and will respond to any problem areas overnight.

Motorists should be aware of re-freezing potential and reduce their speeds. Icing conditions like these often present a hazard where drivers are going too fast to avoid losing control.

We Care is a local charity for Cumberland Countians

When Burkesville and Cumberland County families are in need, the We Care local charity is there for them. Unlike the American Cancer Society, a highly recognized charity in the realm of research for a cure, this money stays right where it is collected. The Steel Force Stampede motorcycle ride with leader Leon Smith is now the charity's biggest annual fundraiser in addition to yard sales.

By Linda Waggener

We Care charity organization was founded over a decade ago in Burkesville, KY, when Hazel Willis Smith lost her first sister to cancer. The charity lives on today and helps people with gas for travel, medicine, food, etc., and recipients must be current residents of Cumberland County. Nobody who works with We Care gets paid.

By Peg Schaeffer

There are two events I look forward to every year - one is the Kentucky Derby, the other the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show - in that order. The 139th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was this past week. It's on television for two nights, Monday and Tuesday, and is the culmination of several days showing. First dogs have to win their "breed" and then they have to win their "group". The winners of each breed compete with the winners of their group. After that the winners of each group go on to compete for "Best of Show".

LWC Softball sweeps Albany State

By: Chris Wells

ALBANY, Ga. -- No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball finally opened the 2015 season today and the Blue Raiders did not disappoint in a doubleheader sweep over host Albany State (Ga.).

Lindsey Wilson pitchers Casey Bryan and Jordan Hood were dominant in the circle while the Blue Raider offense produced 12 runs and 20 hits in the 5-1 and 7-0 wins.

Like several NAIA teams this past week, the Blue Raiders (2-0) were forced to cancel several games due to the winter weather conditions and brutal temperatures. Lindsey Wilson shook off the cold and headed to warmer conditions to find Albany State -- a NCAA Division II member -- willing to serve as host for the Blue Raiders season opener.

Cool Springs Farm: Of cattle and soft-hearted cattle barons

Writing from Cool Springs Farm, Gradyville, Paradise USA

GRADYVILLE, KY (6:14pmCT Sat 21 Feb 2015) - Ever the big softie "cattle baron" I've been having trouble sleeping lately on account of this screwed-up Arctic weather. So last night it "warms up" to 32ish with 2-3" of rain on our already frigid cows all day--insult to injury.

Feeling helpless, I pick my pea brain for what I could do to help our poor bovine critters out. Eureka! I'll go buy some straw and make a thick straw bed around their round bales of hay so they don't have to bed down directly in the mud and slushy snow

An accompanying photo is the family of Milton Jesse Murrell, a Union Army veteran of the Civil War. taken in 1906 in Bliss, KY. From Left: Charles Murrell MD, Suzy Murrell, John Murrell DDS, Rev.
