Letter: Jim's article brings memories, stories

Comments re article 73307 JIM: Winter of 1917-18 was a real ripsnorter

by Paul Patton

The recent articles about the winter of 1917-18 brought to my mind stories which I heard my parents tell about that severe winter.

My dad was 14 years of age in 1917 and he told us about the harsh weather, the deep snows and the waters of Green River being frozen so solid that he and his father could drive a loaded wagon across the river near the community of Dunnville.

Mourning Dove Rescue Center at Tucker's Station Farms

A little human intervention helps "Shades' return to the wild after an encounter of the bird dog kind. The now happy to be alive bird had trauma and treatment but should make it if she heeds the Armitages' condition of parole.

With the temps hovering just above zero this morning up here at Tucker's Station Farms we found - once again - the necessity of opening up the Wild Bird Rescue Center at the farm house aka a cardboard box sitting on a heating vent.

Maybe it was the mind numbing cold that contributed to this near disaster but for some unknown reason one of our beautiful Mourning Doves decided to lounge on the wrong side of the backyard fence and found herself in the clutches of Brownie "the bird hater" dog.

KY Afield Outdoors: Improving fisheries to try this spring

This is the sixth of a series of articles detailing essential outdoor skills to learn before the warm winds of spring arrive in Kentucky.

By: Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - The deepest snow since Bill Clinton roamed the White House pounded Kentucky this week, leaving in its wake stranded cars, sore backs from shoveling snow and grumbling citizens.

It seems remote now, but in just a couple of weeks, we'll be slipping on short sleeve fishing shirts and hitting the water. This bracing cold will soon pass.

Discovering emerging populations of sport fish in a lake or stream is a good skill to learn to increase your fishing success. It is also the easiest skill to learn concerning the outdoors.

Snow clearing: Needs so husband can get to the doctor

Maury Lewis writes:

I live on Combest Drive (Joppa community) and we need our driveway cleared of snow so my husband can go to the doctor tomorrow around 11amCT. I am not asking for someone to do it for free but I do need some estimates. The drive is 210 feet long and I need a place cleared that we can back into so we can go out of the drive without backing into the road. Clay Jones: Paper cup can work like a pet mask

Clay Jones writes:
You can use a small paper cup at the end of an oxygen line to do the same thing as a pet mask. It's called blow by oxygen. Just run the end of the oxygen tube through a small hole in the bottom of the cup and attach the other end to the oxygen tank and your pet has now got oxygen. Cheap, safe, effective. - Clay Jones

Comment on oxygen mask for pets

Celia Downey writes:
This is a good question posed by Joyce. However, we do not necessarily need a mask to deliver oxygen. Sometimes fighting to keep a mask in place is more trouble than it is worth. In some situations it is very appropriate to just connect a piece of tubing to oxygen and let the oxygen "blow" onto the face. What is needed is a connector between the oxygen source and the tubing to deliver it to the face. Pretty simple and effective for basic cases. My friends, David and Todd, at EMS will love this. - Celia Downey

The Road Situation in Adair County, 1912-1913, and the First County Road

This article is inspired, in part by an earlier article on the Big Freshet of 1913. Good roads, and how to achieve them, were almost as big an issue one hundred years ago, when they remain the focus of attention
Click on headline for complete story

By Jim

This article in no wise covers the complexity--or duration--of Adair County's "good roads question." In fact, it barely gives a glimpse. That issue explored in depth would take more hours of reading and research than this aging chronoscryer has left, and the resulting document would easily fit into the category of "tome."

The Road Situation in Adair County, 1912-1913
and the First County Road Engineer

In the Spring of 1912, the Kentucky Legislature passed two acts for the furtherance of good roads in the state. The first created a department of public roads, created a Commissioner of Public Roads, and made "provision for regulating the disbursement of a fund in the treasury of the state known as the 'State Road Fund.'"

BJF: Remembers grandmother tell about 1917-18 winter

Hard packed, frozen snow so deep one could walk across fences

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I remember hearing stories from my Grandmother Emma Jessie Fudge about the winter of 17/18. She recalled how the ground was covered for weeks with the drifts being so tall in many places that folks, including her, could just step across fences. The sun and temperatures would melt the surface and it would consequently refreeze on top, making even walking difficult and treacherous. -Billy Joe Fudge

JIM: Winter of 1917-18 was a real ripsnorter

"The worst winter here we have had in forty years"

By JIM

The winter of 1917-18 was a real ripsnorter. As wrote the now long-departed Cyrus some years ago, "Snow fell on the night of December 7, 1917, and by Monday, January 15, 1918, a total of twelve snows had fallen since winter's onset. Even more fell after that, and the good people of Adair County didn't see the ground until February. And with the snow, came cold--breath-taking, bone-biting cold..." The Rugby community newsletter in the January 30, 1918 edition of the Adair County News gave particulars of the weather:
"We are having the worst winter here we have had in forty years, according to our oldest inhabitants. Has been as cold as 18 degrees below zero and now the snow is 12 inches deep on the level and in some places it is drifted over a man's head. Some roads are blockaded and traveling is difficult. We did without any mail several days last week... "The bad weather has about killed our schools. Our attendance has been as low the thermometer. They will soon be out and if it keeps on this kind of weather, I guess no one will care."
