Billy Joe Fudge: Fun center entrance design commendable

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I would love to commend those who designed and built the new entrance to the bowling alley. You respected the trees and the landscape. You could have built a cheaper access road by bulldozing a couple of trees but you instead chose the high road, pun intended. I, for one, am already impressed with your establishment and I predict that you will have a great and profitable business because of your putting your and our community ahead of your own immediate needs. - Billy Joe Fudge

Sound of Music at V.P. Henry: A don't miss presentation

Raves for Musical at Lindsey Wilson College: 'Those who haven't seen the Sound of Music should do so. It's really first class, and the talent - all local will absolutely stun those seeing it for the first time. Maggie Coleman would give Julie Andrews a run for her money. And others who you would might not expect to sound any better than you or I sound like larks. All of the acting is well above average for local theater. Well above.' - GEORGE KOLBENSCHLAG
The Sound of Music will be performed three more times this week at 7pmCT each evening, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 17, 18, and 19, 2014, in the V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY.

By George Kolbenschlag

The Hill was alive with the Sound of Music Friday and Saturday evening and will be again next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It's a great evening's entertainment.

Whitehurst Diaries: Bugs/blights list has Old Testament cadence

Even idyllic Gradyville, KY, has challenges for the valley's farmers and gardeners, with plagues of bugs and blights, and now, one of opossum critters. Even Willis the Cat is put off by them. The Whitehurst Possum War is now in its 5th year, though it's gone nuclear only once, when Jim killed one with a rifle which had terrorized the farm. Mostly, the heaviest equipment used, otherwise, has been a HavAHart trap.

Recitation of the bugs and blights which plague the dedicated gardener can begin to have an Old Testament cadence: squash vine borers, Japanese beetles, potato bugs, striped cucumber beetles. Then there is tomato blight and drought that must be factored in.
