Soft skills: Service is what counts

Mary Ann Brown writes:
I know first impressions count big . . .but should they always? When a waitress/waiter waits on my table it is about the service. Were they attentive to our needs? Sure we would not want one to wait on us smelling like a skunk or hair falling out of their heads, green teeth but just because they are not dressed in white shirt/black slacks and tie doesn't automatically mean they do not give good service. Some waiters/waitresses might now have the means to wear the best for the job. Cleanliness and manners go along way with me. Yes, we live in a society that puts too much emphasis on whether the person is wearing the top of the line clothing instead of great service. When you dine out in a set down restaurant that has waiters/waitresses does it really count what the brand name of the clothing is? - Mary Ann Brown

A Soft Skill Tip: Dressing up improves income

Small changes in habit make big difference in income: Is spending almost as much time dressing up for work as important as dressing up for Easter Sunday church? Anecdotal evidence is available that it does. It goes like this: A wait staffer dressed in classic feral hippie style was getting below average tips. On his own, without encouragement from management, he changed styles to formal black-and-white, complete with tie, and tips were measurably better. A great thing for him. Good for management, as more and more customers became regulars - on his shift.
