Why the Name of Square Oak? Russell County History: The school and church came to be known by the little Square Oak tree By Tine S. Reynolds Did you ever hear about the origins of the name of Square Oak (church and school at Ono)? The first librarian at Russell Co. High School was Mrs. Beatrice Powell and she explained about the name Square Oak. She was from Ono, which is where Square Oak is located. Her grandfather was an attorney there and also kept the post office. She started teaching about 1935 and taught over 40 years in all types of schools ranging from first grade in a very poor district on Cumberland River (Depression era), she said, also RSES, RCHS, and even a few years at LWC. According to Mrs. Powell in an interview given years ago at WKU, the name of Square Oak actually originated from an oak tree. She said, "People used to hitch their horses when they'd go to church and when they'd hitch horses, they'd have to tie them around a tree. Well, somebody had the idea, if you'd nail four big planks around that tree you'd have places to put hitching hooks of some kind, nails or something, but anyway they would hitch the horses to these hooks that they put into the four boards. As that little tree grew, it got to be a square tree. Finally, when the boards were taken off, it was a square oak. And the name of the school and the church both were Square Oak. But the post office was Ono...." --Tine S Reynolds 2013-12-27 15:31:40 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

Letter: Applauds Hospital Board for accepting local bidder Urges future policy of employment of Adair Countians first William Reed writes: I surely applaud WRH for their acceptance of Melson Roofings bid. The reason being, is that it keeps the work being done by Adair county people and not some outside contractor that will take and bring their people here and take the money and run. Thanks for keeping Adair Countians working. Our people need the work more than some outside contractor. I hope that in the future WRH will continue to employ Adair Countians first. - William ReedComments re article 64200 Adair County Hospital Board accepts bid or new WRH roof 2013-12-27 08:26:20 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
