Long awaited Adair vocational schools soon to be reality

Two programs, both in final funding stages, are coming through KCTCS: 1) Welding including MIG and TIG, and 2) Health Careers Center. 'I've been hearing one question since 1977: Why doesn't Adair County have a vocational school? Well, we're now getting one - the closest thing we may ever get to having a technical center on campus with this satellite campus of Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center,' Supt. Alan W. Reed says in making the announcement.

Susan Chambers and I don't deserve to have as much fun as we are having each week our radio show on 99.1 the Hoss. We have been highly blessed and are grateful. With that said, our purpose is to shine a light on our community by spotlighting our citizens, making announcements, and entertaining with our memories and antics. We also like to take on projects that will benefit our fellow citizens and our community.

Opinion: Food stamps need WIC-like restrictions

Jarrett Miller writes:
The real problem with food stamps is that they are not used efficiently. Having seen the people in line at the store, there carts are full of potato chips, french fries, chicken nuggets, pop tarts, etc. On top of that it is almost always name brand. If they would buy generic, stick to meat, bread, potatoes, fruits and vegitables, their dollars would go twice as far. There needs to be stricter limits on what you can buy, like there is for WIC. --Jarrett Miller

Food Stamp Cuts: No stamps for those doing drugs, she says

Betty Gadberry writes:
It may put pressure on the food pantries, but if the people getting the welfare checks and food stamps can afford to buy beer and cigarettes and do meth and other drugs then they could buy food. It is the kids that suffer because of their parents. It's these people that are abusing the system. I think that people who get welfare and food stamps should have to have a drug test even at the food pantries. If you are doing drugs then you get nothing. - Betty Gadberry

Thanks. Thanks. Come to think of it, getting a phone off mute is hard for me, too, but not 100th as hard as the cable television remotes. I remember when Charles Marshall ran City Tv and it was easy to run the controls - even I could do it. Now it takes more technical skills to run a Tv than a Boeing 747. Cutting wood in the winter

Quite a lot of water has trickled down Wolf Creek since Dad, brother Bob, and I bundled up in warm under and outer wear and rode in a wagon pulled by Dick and Diamond to the timber on the rented 'Fauver 80.' Once there, we would cut wood to feed the gluttonous furnace of the Hinman household. It was a boring but necessary job if we were to keep warm. Bob and I were healthy maturing teenagers for which this was a Saturday ritual in the cold winter months when we were out of school.

Not Just a Cake Mix

I vividly recall March of 1948. That is when our family took its first real vacation together after the war. Our departure date was based on the arrival at Dee & Jay Motor Company of our new car. Dad had ordered a brand new DeSoto sedan from Mr. Dunagan. I walked by Dee & Jay on Main Street and peered through the big double doors every chance I got looking for the new car. When it came, we were off to New Orleans - Dad, Mother, Ann, and I, of course. But there was Uncle Bill and Aunt Bur - J.W. and Virgie Edwards, Dad's sister and brother-in-law from Woodburn.
