Proud to Be An American, Adair Countian, and a Veteran

Only in Adair County: 'I have been doing PGR rides for 4 years or so and from one end of Kentuckyy to the other. At no time or place have I ever seen every single car stop for a funeral procession... ' - JOE HARE

By Joe Hare, Patriot Guard Rider
Commander, Columbia VFW Post 6097

It is very easy for any of us to find something to gripe about, especially about our own county. Today I can say I am very, very proud to say I am an Adair Countian.

As a member of the Kentucky Patriot Guard Riders and VFW, we were invited to honor a fallen veteran, Bobby Gene Pike, here in Columbia. As the PGR, we had 26 bikes here to escort Bobby to his final resting place, the Bear Wallow Cemetery.

Every oncoming car along 10 mile route stopped for procession

2013-08-02 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Two of 26 Patriot Guard Riders cross the Square at the outset of a 10 mile route carry U.S. Army Veteran Bobby Gene Pike to his final resting place at Bear Wallow Cemetery. Along the way, PGR member Joe Hare recalls, every single oncoming car stopped to show respect. In four years of escorts, all over Kentucky, he says, it was a first. Adding, "It made me proud to be an American, proud to be an Adair Countian, proud to be a Veteran."

Likes turn of events for Westlake; commends Board of Trustees

Encouraged things are heading in a positive direction

Carole Thomas

After so much time has passed since the saga of Westlake began, I am pleased to see that the officials have been following through with the investigation of the Westlake dilemma. There has not been anything said for a very long time and we were beginning to think that nothing would ever come of it.

I commend the Hospital Board of Trustees for taking action to save the hospital. I believe that this Board is managing Westlake issues very well and I appreciate their time spent in doing so. Thanks to the Westlake staff for hanging in there and believing that the hospital is worth saving.

We need that emergency room to meet the needs of the critically ill or injured until transports to other facilities can be completed. Today, I am encouraged that things are heading in a positive direction for Westlake. Carole Thomas, R.N. - Carole Thomas

Fogs in August - Meticulous records of father proved method

Climate change may be affecting system today

By Joyce M. Coomer

Couldn't find what I had posted last year about fogs in August relating to snows in winter. My father kept very good weather records on the calendars. He wrote down each day the temp at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m., whether or not it was rainy and how much rain we received, etc. He also kept a meticulous record of fogs in August.

Fogs were recorded, not only by when they occurred, but the density of the fog and what time the fog burned off in the mornings. Each week of August was roughly correlated to a month or so of winter, which my father generally considered to be from the middle to end of November to the end of March -- what used to be the normal "winter" season in this area. The heavy fogs were predictors of heavy snows, and the longer it took the fog to burn off in the morning, the longer the snow would stay on the ground. Light fogs were predictors of flurries or skiffs of snow that didn't accumulate much or melted quickly. This method of predicting snows and their accumulation and duration was more accurate than the weather forecasts in the newspaper.

However, with the weather patterns so different now than they were 50 years ago, I don't know if this would be as accurate nowadays. - Joyce M. Coomer

Mary Ann Brown clarifies scientific fog in August predictions

Snow does not have to be a heavy snow, but just an actual snow, which could be flurries. When this standard was used, Fogs in August as Prediction of Snows was exact in Taylor County last winter. Not one snow more, not one snow less.

Mary Ann Brown writes:
Doubting Lois, I have always been told that it is not a heavy snow but an actual snow which could be flurries or etc. Last August Campbellsville/Taylor County got 13 fog mornings and we indeed had 13 days that snow fell, might not accumulated but had flurries or some accumulation. First time I ever kept a calendar to watch and see, but at 60 I had to know if this was true or not. --Mary Ann Brown

Lindsey Wilson Bell has been effective weapon in baseball wars

Comments about: Historic Lindsey Wilson Bell is safe, in storage

By Mike Talley

Just some updated information, the bell was used by the Lindsey Wilson baseball team in the mid to late '90s.

The current cart that it is on now was built so that members of the team could roll out the bell during game days. Every time a home run was hit by LWC, someone would ring the bell.

Opposing pitchers did not like the sound of the bell. Mike Talley

Doubting Lois thinks the Fog Day Science is Old Wives Tale

Lois Cunningham writes:
I will believe it when I see it.

Ed, I have lived in Adair County for 17 years and ever since I moved here I have heard the old wives tale of every day of fog in August is a heavy snow day in winter; in the seventeen years I have been here I can count on one hand the days of heavy snow I have experienced. I think this wives tale has outlived its truism, and I am happy that in my years here heavy snow has been few and far between. Hopefully that will be the case this year too. - Lois Cunningham

Fog is a Factor: So far- 2 days. 2 fogs. 2 snows for winter

The National Weather Service is giving a "fog/mist" now, but it's somewhat of an understatement, Larry Smith, FM 92.7 called to report. "It's thick as brick this morning." He said. "Visibility is less than a mile anywhere between my house in Campbellsville and the drive here at the WAVE studio on KY 80."
"Count them. So far, 2 days in August. 2 Fogs in August. And that means 2 big snows in winter, according to the old timers. If it keeps this up, we're going to have a hard, coldy snowy winter," he said. "Tell everybody reading ColumbiaMagazine this morning to please drive carefully."
