RRW: A time for everything: A time to fix. A time to tear down

BUILDING CODES: 'No. I don't like to see unsightly property in Columbia, but i don't like to see too much power in the hands of too few people, either. - RALPH WAGGENER

There comes a time for tear down rather than fix and this old house has become somewhat dangerous.

The problem with Zoning Laws is that they become what a few want and end up being a bigger problem than help.

Butterflies get moisture from anything with damp surface

2013-07-22 - Fairplay, KY - Photo by Joyce Coomer. Butterflies will get moisture from anything that is barely damp. Yesterday I was trying to get a good shot of a giant swallowtail that was on my butterfly weed for at least eight hours, and a small fritillary kept going from the blooms to grass underneath the butterfly weed where there were some lingering dewdrops. A butterfly waterer can be made from a shallow pan (jelly roll pan, etc.,) filled with sand and kept damp. - Joyce Coomer

Delwin K. Blair: Let's get rid of disgusting looking property

Agrees with Vickie Pike

Delwin K Blair writes:

I agree strongly with Vickie Pike about the unsightly buildings in our town.

I have spoken on different occasions with some members of the city council about the rundown buildings and falling down homes and all please to end this problem have gone unheeded.

From what I can tell, their answers seem to be "just ignore it and it will go away" or "we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings". Well, my feelings are hurt by having to live in a town which is in an obvious state of decay- especially, since I am a taxpayer in said city.

Removal of old houses: Sad to see

It is sad that outward appearance is what is deemed worthy these days instead of substance.
Click on headline for complete commentary

By Joyce M. Coomer

It is sad to see old houses disappear, especially those that could be made liveable again. I have always enjoyed old houses, the older the better, and will explore them, to see how the house was constructed and how the rooms are laid out, and if there is no furniture present, I imagine how people arranged furniture in the rooms and what pieces of furniture they would have used.

Yvonne Kolbenschlag comments on old Parson property

Commends June and Bill Parson for their efforts to remove old house

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag
Personal opinion

Memories of an idyllic time do not hit everyone the same. Perhaps a photo or two or the old house would help remembrances of times past. I've read that old structures such as this do not impress most people and give a bad image of a town. The other thing is that June Parson has taken so much criticism because people believe she will not remove - what many people term "an eyesore". June and her husband both want it removed and they have tried and tried to contact the other kin - spending a lot on searches and attorneys.

Critique: Great photograph by Billy Wheat

Comments re photo 50607 Bliss KY goes up in flames

Jon Halsey writes:
Great pic. Sad event, but still a great picture, I can feel the heat and smell the smoke. What more could a photog want? --Jon Halsey, Knifley, KY
Thanks for the insight, Mr. Halsey. Billy Wheat has an artist's eye. And this photo was taken with an iPhone, and sent to CM directly from the phone. We're hoping to receive one other, of the chimney left standing. And just so everyone understands: This was private property and the action was at the will of the property owner, not because of a decree from Emperor Nero. - EW

Thinks old house should be renovated or torn down

Miss Donna Rieder writes:
I, too, have wondered about that old house; it's a shame to see it looking so sad, as I'm sure it was quite a charming home at one time. I think one of two things should happen: tear it down or renovate it. Having worked in residential construction for most of my younger years, and having renovated an abandoned farmhouse in Georgia (where I lived for 20-some years after), I can see potential where others may see an eyesore. I wish I had the funding to restore it. I'd be happy to donate time and skill if that ever becomes an option! --Miss Donna Rieder
