Flowers: The Bright Red Awe-zalias are in bloom

2013-05-07 - East Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It's a flowering shrub, and I think it's an azalia,. Always when the word comes to mind I remember the other Kentucky pronunciation for the plant, sometimes with a grand effort to get it right, sometimes with the great suth-ren tradition of grand pretentious - putting on airs - when otherwise unknowing people think that carefully shaping words, regardless of their lack of knowledge about how it should be said, makes them sound more intelligent. I've heard the word awe-zalias from both camps. But now, in this best spring ever, I have to admit that they are on to something. "Awe-zalia" is much more fitting - maybe an understatement, for the awesome infinity of beauty they deliver.

Thank a Teacher today, National Teacher day

By Supt. Alan W. Reed, Adair County School District

Without question few other professionals touch as many people as teachers do. Adair County teachers touch the lives of our future every day. This is National Teacher Appreciation Day, and I want to join with Adair County citizens to honor the hard work of our teachers - past, present and future.

Adair County teachers are on the job today because of a sense mission. It's certainly not the money. Our teachers are completing year seven without a pay increase. But they certainly aren't working less. Because of teachers, student test scores are trending upward, learning "gaps" are being closed and Adair County students are demonstrating that they can compete with students anywhere.

I hope each and every one of you will take a moment to somehow thank a teacher. Perhaps you will drop a note, send an e-mail or make a call to let some teacher know that you appreciate how they changed you life or the life of your child. -- Alan Reed, Superintendent
