Global War on Kentucky Denigration wins battle with New Yorker

Writer recalls politely educating a New Yorker about his misperceptions of modern Kentucky, but, looking back, thinks it would have been more appropriate to have jacked his jaw for bothering her with questions which showed his ignorance of our Great Commonwealth. Furthermore, than are miles of differences between the sorry, womanizing JR Ewing and our JR - Jimmy Reliford.

By Mary Ann Brown
Personal Commentary

That ( Ralph Roy Waggener, Joyce Coomer said it right) is so right.

People from New York or live in New York do think that Kentucky is backward and ignorant.

Joyce Coomer: Payback for those denigrating Kentucky

Joyce Coomer writes:
I have had personal experience with people denigrating Kentucky and Kentuckians - people scattered from around the world - from Iranian air force pilots to German literary agents, and just about anyone in any field in between. After I get tired of listening to them, I pay 'em back, most usually by asking them about something that I consider should be common knowledge but which they are ignorant about. - Joyce M. Coomer

Rolllin Knifley: Response for Joyce (and allies Ralph Roy, Shamarie, et al?)

By Rollin Knifley
Personal Commentary

No matter how "proper" or "educated" or whatever other qualities we wish the outside world to perceive this area as being or having, nor how many of those qualities the people of Kentucky have, the entire rest of the world is going to consider Kentucky as "backward" no matter what we do. (Who said so? Not me.)

Joyce Coomer: Let's get off our high horses

Kentucky is a state of contrasts and not everyone wishes to get above their raising and pretend to be something they're not. . .We become ashamed of our roots only because the outside world wishes us to do so; when we allow others to influence our view of ourselves, we have lost ourselves. - JOYCE COOMER

By Joyce Coomer
Personal commentary

The show kept their business "nobody's business but their own" . . . I don't recall any in-depth discussions of their current financial status nor of their personal lives.

The oil men weren't portrayed as ignorant, stupid nor inept, just as they are -- people who are down-to-earth and hardworking.

Let's begin our show with a rusty truck, a rooster, a crumbling building or two and lots of mud.....Gee, that sounds like it was filmed in rural Kentucky, or so my out- of- state friends would speculate.

Unfortunately, that's the image that so many people hold of our beautiful state.

Offended by language, shaking of ()s, shaking of behind

Writer is disappointed with Backyard Oil

Shirley Mings writes:
Citizens of Adair County should be totally embarrassed that something like this would come out of our county. Some may be proud, but not me.

We are friendly,"down to earth" common sense country folks here. We are blessed with good schools, churches, universities, Green River Lake, and the list of good things could go on and on, and this kind of stuff (Backyard oil) portrays something totally different. The inappropriate language, the shaking of the ()s and shaking of the behind, and then praying to an Almighty God for just the right spot for oil just looks like people in this area do not know any better.

Although I realize that money talks and "anything goes' in some circles, I do not care anything about watching this junk; I almost think some of it is a mockery to our Lord Jesus Christ. I am. . . disappointed. - Shirley Mings

Backyard Oil
Shamarie Claiborne writes:

Ok Folks - It comes down to the following choices:
Option A - If you like the show tune in on Tuesday nights at 9 pm - on the Discovery Channel.
Option B - If you don't like the show turn the channel and watch something else.
Personnally I am taking Option A. To my own surprise, I REALLY like the show. - Shamarie Claiborne

Steve Wilson: Loves Backyard Oil, proud of oil men

About Travis and Jimmy, he says: I think either one of those two men would help a family if they knew they needed it and that means a lot these days. You know, a lot of people get a few dollars ahead in life and they forget who the poor man is. - STEVE WILSON

Steve Wilson writes:
I myself am proud to live in the same county as these oil men. I don't see a problem with how they dress or what country slang they communicate with, they are people who have just been more fortunate than some of us. I know Travis Coomer when I see him and that's about it. But Jimmy and I are friends. I personally like the man. I think it's awesome how he grew up poor, like me, and now he can buy pretty much what he wants. I think either one of those two men would help a family if they knew they needed it and that means a lot these days. You know, a lot of people get a few dollars ahead in life and they forget who the poor man is. I had rather have friends with money who will talk to me like I'm human than having them run around in Botany 500 suits and thinking they're better than I am. Oh well, loved the show. Can't wait too see more. The only thing negative I have to say is, I wish, since I am a licensed auctioneer, that i had been the one to sell the oil finding rooster at a small commission rate. lol. no matter what we do in life, you will always have negative remarks. As for me, I like the positive side!!!!!!! - Steve Wilson
